What does this PR do?

Wrong analyst answers are usually a misread question, not broken SQL. Two common forms: a filter on the wrong column, which excludes nothing, and two readings of an ambiguous clause where the agent picks one by wording. answer_commit is the last point where the agent can still change its answer. A note added after the commit does nothing, because the agent repeats the committed text unchanged.

Before it accepts an answer, answer_commit now re-checks it against data and rejects it once per turn when the data contradicts it:

  • Vacuous filters. It takes the turn's last sql_execute query and re-counts its rows with each top-level WHERE conjunct removed in turn (at most 6). If removing a conjunct leaves the count unchanged, that conjunct is reported. IS NOT NULL guards are skipped.
  • Reading ledger. readings entries can now carry sql and warehouse. When two or more readings carry SQL, answer_commit runs each one and compares the results as unordered row sets with typed values, at most 200 rows.
    • If the results disagree and the commit has no reading_evidence, the commit is rejected.
    • If they agree, that is recorded in metadata.
  • Schema-derived alternatives. When there is a finding, the review also lists other date-like or status-like columns of the same tables. These come from the catalog only.

The review is a status: "error" result marked answer_commit review:. The next commit in the same turn is accepted. It is meant as a second look, not a gate. Commits with nothing to re-run stay synchronous.

Behavior: was → now

  • Commit after a local DuckDB query with a zero-effect filter: was accepted at once → now rejected once with the filter named, then accepted.
  • Readings with SQL that return different results: was accepted → now rejected once unless reading_evidence is given.
  • Everything else, including remote warehouses, SQLite, Postgres and checks turned off: no change.

New schema fields, all optional: readings[].sql, readings[].warehouse, reading_evidence.

Cost side effects

  • Where it runs. Local DuckDB only: the session scratch database, or a DuckDB file connection whose path is local. Remote warehouses are never queried, and attached non-DuckDB or remote databases are rejected.

  • What it runs. A single plain SELECT with:

    • no CTEs, subqueries or table functions;
    • only built-in functions, so user macros are rejected;
    • joins only with a column equality.

    Every base table must have at most 500,000 rows by catalog estimate, and no view may share its name.

  • How much. Counts go through a subquery capped at 1,000,001 rows; a larger count skips the check. Each check stops sending queries after 250 ms.

    • Vacuous-filter check: at most 1 + 6 counting queries plus catalog lookups.
    • Readings: one capped probe plus one run per reading.
  • Interruption. Running queries are never interrupted, because interrupting restarts the local engine and drops scratch tables. The size gates above are what bound the work.

  • No model calls. The check adds no tokens beyond the one review message.

  • Off switch. ALTIMATE_SQL_AUTO_CHECK=off (or 0 / false) disables all of it.

  • Known limit. The per-row cost of built-in scalar functions is not bounded. A reading that calls one with a huge argument could run until the driver's query timeout, which is 120 s by default. The same SQL run through sql_execute would have the same cost.

How did you verify your code works?

All of this runs against real DuckDB (session scratch) and SQLite fixtures, with no mocks of the engine.

  • test/altimate/tools/answer-commit-evidence.test.ts (17 tests) covers:

    • a zero-row filter is flagged; effective filters and IS NOT NULL guards are not;
    • these are skipped: SQLite, a 600k-row table, subqueries, CTEs, comma joins, a non-equality join, an equi-join past the row cap, user macros;
    • an inner equi-join is checked;
    • readings that agree are recorded; readings that disagree get one rejection and are accepted with reading_evidence;
    • NULL vs 'null' and 1 vs '1' are kept distinct;
    • the alternative-columns line;
    • the tool rejects once, then accepts the recommit;
    • the check reads only the committing session's scratch store;
    • ALTIMATE_SQL_AUTO_CHECK=off does nothing.
  • These suites also pass: test/altimate/tools/answer-commit* (230 tests), plus tool-schema*, sql-execute* and test/agent (579 tests, 0 fail). bun run typecheck is clean. script/upstream/analyze.ts --markers --base main --strict is clean.

  • Two rounds of local read-only Codex review. The first round's findings are fixed:

    • the scratch store was resolved from the wrong session;
    • joins were unbounded;
    • the budget did not stop later queries;
    • a CTE name could hide a table from the size gate;
    • values were compared as untyped strings.

    The second round's findings are also fixed: nested-loop joins and user macros are now rejected. The remaining finding is the driver-timeout note under the known limit above. Reviewed head: 3eb91df05b.

  • Not run: an end-to-end agent session. This PR adds no evaluation runs.

Note

Medium Risk
Changes the analyst terminal commit path and executes extra read-only SQL on local DuckDB; bounded and opt-out, but a mistaken rejection or session-scoping bug could block or skip checks incorrectly.

Overview
answer_commit now runs optional, bounded local DuckDB checks before accepting an analyst answer (toggle ALTIMATE_SQL_AUTO_CHECK=off). When evidence contradicts the commit, the tool returns status: "error" once per turn with an answer_commit review: message; a second call with the same answer proceeds (or reading_evidence when readings disagree).

New module answer-commit-evidence re-runs the turn’s last sql_execute query under strict limits (~250 ms, row caps, plain SELECTs only): vacuous filters (WHERE conjuncts that remove no rows), reading comparison when two+ readings[].sql disagree, and catalog hints for alternate date/status-like columns. Evidence is attached to commit metadata on success.

Schema additions: readings[].sql, readings[].warehouse, reading_evidence. Integration tests cover DuckDB scratch session scoping and skip paths (SQLite, large tables, unsafe SQL).

Summary by cubic

answer_commit now re-checks the committed answer against data on local DuckDB before accepting it, rejecting the commit once per turn when the evidence contradicts it comma (previously commits were accepted immediately). The check is bounded and optional, so it stays synchronous and safe by default.

Behavior

  • Commits with a vacuous WHERE filter (one that removes no rows) are rejected once, with the filter named.
  • Readings that carry sql are executed and compared as typed, unordered row sets; disagreement rejects once unless reading_evidence is provided.
  • Agreeing readings and vacuous-filter findings are recorded in commit metadata.
  • The review also lists other date-like or status-like columns of the same tables.
  • The check runs only on local DuckDB (scratch or local file), with a 250 ms budget, a 500k-row table ceiling, capped counts, no user macros or non-equi-joins, and no query interruption.
  • ALTIMATE_SQL_AUTO_CHECK=off (or 0 / false) disables it; everything else stays unchanged.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Answer submissions can now be checked against local query results for filters that do not affect results and disagreements between readings.
    • When a review is needed, the submission is paused with supporting evidence and can be retried after clarification. Agreeing readings may include evidence in the committed result.
    • Automatic checks are limited to eligible local DuckDB queries and can be turned off.

… comparison

`answer_commit` now checks the committed answer against bounded re-runs on
local DuckDB (the session scratch database or a local DuckDB file) before
accepting it, and asks the agent to look once when the data contradicts it:

- Vacuous filters: the latest `sql_execute` query of the turn is re-counted
  with each top-level WHERE filter removed in turn (at most 6). A filter
  that removes no rows is reported; `IS NOT NULL` guards are skipped.
- Reading comparison: `readings` entries may carry `sql` (and `warehouse`).
  When two or more run, their results are compared as unordered row sets
  (at most 200 rows). Disagreement without the new `reading_evidence`
  field triggers the review; agreement is recorded in metadata.
- Alternatives: with a finding, the review lists other date-like or
  status-like columns of the same tables (catalog only).

The review is one rejection per turn, marked `answer_commit review:`; the
next commit is accepted. Every re-run is gated: single SELECT, base tables
only (no table functions, no joins without a condition), each table at most
500,000 rows, 250 ms budget per check, no query interruption, skipped
silently otherwise. Commits with nothing to re-run stay synchronous.
`ALTIMATE_SQL_AUTO_CHECK=off` disables it. No model calls.

- Bind the evidence checks to the committing session, so the scratch
  warehouse resolves to that session's store, not the default one.
- Count rows through a capped subquery (at most 1,000,000 joined rows);
  a larger count skips the check, so a join with a loose condition
  cannot run long. Readings get the same capped probe before they run.
- Refuse to send further queries once the 250 ms budget has passed.
- Reject statements with any CTE or subquery, so a CTE name cannot hide
  a table from the size gate.
- Compare reading results with typed values: NULL, 'null', 1 and '1'
  stay distinct.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…functions

- A join must carry a column equality, so DuckDB hash-joins it and the
  row cap stops the work; a nested-loop join can scan every pair while
  producing few rows, which the cap does not bound.
- Every called function must be built in: a user macro can hide a large
  read or an attached remote warehouse behind a function call.

WARNING: isEquality accepts same-table column comparisons (e.g. a.id = a.id), which DuckDB plans as a nested-loop join rather than a hash join.

isEquality only checks that both sides are COLUMN_REF nodes without verifying that they reference distinct relation sides of the join. A join condition like ON a.id = a.id AND a.id < b.id passes equiJoin(n.condition) even though a.id = a.id is a single-table tautology (as demonstrated on line 135 of the test file) and DuckDB executes the join as a nested-loop / cross product that LIMIT ${COUNT_CAP + 1} cannot bound when the inequality filters out most pairs.

WARNING: duckdb_columns() query omits NOT internal, as well as database_name/schema_name scoping and bounded() verification.

  1. Unlike smallLocalTable and bounded, this query does not filter WHERE NOT internal (or scope by database_name / schema_name from select.tables), so columns from attached databases, other schemas, or internal DuckDB views/tables sharing the same table_name can be mixed into the alternative-column suggestions for table.
  2. alternativeColumns does not call bounded(run, select), so when triggered by disagreeing readings on scratch, it can still inspect lastQuery even if lastQuery references a view or large/attached table that vacuousFilters skipped.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Require the join equality to compare columns from both join sides.

isEquality accepts any COLUMN_REF = COLUMN_REF. This includes a.id = a.id inside an AND, as the test at answer-commit-evidence.test.ts line 135 shows. DuckDB pushes a same-side equality down as a filter. The real join predicate, for example a.id <= b.id, still runs as a nested-loop or range join. A low-cardinality expression key such as a.k % 1 = b.k % 1 gives the same pair count.

cappedCount puts every WHERE filter inside the subquery and applies LIMIT COUNT_CAP + 1 outside it. The LIMIT therefore caps rows that leave the filter, not join pairs. Consider a cross-side filter that rejects almost every pair, such as WHERE a.v + b.v < 0. On two 500k-row tables, the query enumerates up to 2.5e11 pairs and never reaches the LIMIT.

compareReadings runs model-written readings[].sql that never ran before. The runner never interrupts local queries. So withinBudget returns after 250 ms, but the scratch connector stays busy until the driver's default timeout. That timeout restarts the engine, which the file header says drops the session's scratch tables.

Also bound the probe with the product of the table sizes. Alternatively, pass a short queryTimeoutMs only if an interrupt is safe for this connector.

Proposed fix: require a cross-relation equality

P1 Badge Enforce SQL permissions for reading queries

When a user configuration denies or restricts sql_execute but leaves answer_commit available, the model can still submit new SQL in readings[].sql: answer_commit.ts checks only the answer_commit permission, and this path obtains the connector and executes each query directly. Although the transaction is read-only, this bypasses the configured database-read boundary and can reveal data through the agree/disagree result; require the SQL permission for every reading query or only compare queries that were previously authorized and executed.

P2 Badge Resolve the effective warehouse for implicit SQL calls

When sql_execute omits warehouse and successfully resolves to a default local DuckDB connection, the persisted input still has no warehouse, so this predicate ignores the query and needsEvidence never runs the new checks. This is a supported invocation because sql-execute.ts declares warehouse optional and resolves an omitted value to the default target; preserve or resolve the effective warehouse instead of requiring the raw input to contain it.

P2 Badge Encode reading rows without delimiter collisions

When a string cell contains U+0001 plus text resembling the next cell's type prefix, distinct row shapes serialize identically because canonical cells are concatenated with that unescaped delimiter. For example, a two-column row ('a', 'b') collides with the one-column string 'a' || chr(1) || 's:b', causing genuinely different readings to be recorded as agreeing; serialize the canonical cell array structurally rather than joining it with an in-band character.

P1 Badge Require join equalities to span both join inputs

For a join whose condition contains a column equality entirely within one input, such as a.id = a.id AND abs(a.id - b.id) = 250000, this check treats the join as hash-bounded even though it supplies no equality key relating a to b. With two tables near the 500,000-row ceiling and a sparse residual predicate, DuckDB can therefore scan a Cartesian-sized nested-loop input without reaching the output cap; because the 250 ms race does not interrupt an active query, this can occupy the engine until its much longer driver timeout. Verify that the accepted equality connects the left and right join relations.

P2 Badge Exclude volatile built-ins from rerun comparisons

When two readings contain the same query with a volatile built-in, for example SELECT random() FROM orders LIMIT 1, both pass this built-in-function check but are executed separately and almost certainly produce different rows. compareReadings then rejects a commit even though the readings are identical, and volatile predicates can likewise make vacuous-filter counts inconsistent across reruns; restrict evidence queries to deterministic functions rather than accepting every internal function.

P2 Badge Attribute used columns to their actual relations

When a query joins tables that share a date- or status-like column name, used contains only the unqualified final name and is applied independently to every table. For example, filtering o.status makes this code claim that c.status was also used and can generate alternatives for the wrong table; similarly, tables with the same name in different schemas are merged by the catalog query above. Preserve the column qualifier and each table's catalog/schema identity when producing alternatives.

P2 Badge Keep compaction continuations inside the current turn

When automatic compaction occurs after the final sql_execute and before answer_commit, the compaction continuation is stored as a newer user-role message, so this slice discards the query even though it belongs to the same logical request. The prompt loop explicitly distinguishes such user messages by their compaction part, but currentTurn does not, causing evidence checks to be skipped in long sessions and causing a prior review marker to be forgotten if compaction occurs before the retry; select the latest non-compaction user request instead.
