Section 5 of ai-docs/ai-migration-v14-v15.md ("Channel no longer watches the channel") told agents to rewrite every self-created channel into client.channelManager.ensure(...).ensureWatched(), without explaining why. While migrating the website-react-examples demo apps, that led to unnecessary rewrites of working client.channel() + watch() code. Reverting them in turn exposed a case the guide does need ensureWatched() for, and it should say why.

What's actually true (verified)

  • Channels created by id: client.channel(type, id) + await channel.watch() works unchanged. client.channel() is shorthand for client.channelManager.ensure(), and watch() takes the same options as ensureWatched().
  • Members-only channels (client.channel(type, { members }), typical DMs): the created instance is provisional until the server assigns the id. If the client already holds a channel for that cid (event routing can store it while the request is in flight), the store keeps its own instance and marks the created one superseded (supersededBy, watchStatus: NotWatching). The superseded one receives no events.
    • ensureWatched() resolves with the surviving instance; watch() resolves with the response.
    • Reproduced in the team demo app: a DM created from a user search with watch() never received the other user's message (it was there after reload). With ensureWatched()'s instance it arrived live. A/B'd with fresh users each time.
    • ChatView swaps superseded channels in its slots, so this only bites apps that hold the channel themselves.
  • v10 input shape: members is { user_id }[], and custom fields go under custom. Plain ids fail to type-check (TS2769) but the API still accepts them.
  • No manual list insertion: new channels reached matching ChannelPaginator lists through event routing, without ingestChannel, in three apps.

Changes

  • Section 5 splits guidance by case:
    • Channels created by id that the app already watches: nothing changes.
    • Members-only channels: keep client.channel(), but render the instance ensureWatched() resolves with. The supersession reason is spelled out.
    • Code that relied on Channel to watch: add watch() / ensureWatched().
  • Examples: the DM example now takes ensureWatched()'s instance, and getChannel → client.channel(type, id).ensureWatched(). The member and custom shape gets its own paragraph.
  • Source of truth: a new rule, "change only what a section says is broken; snippets show one valid form".
  • Silent-break table: a new row, "a just-created DM renders but never updates". The watch row allows watch().
  • Smaller fixes: the section 4 watchers note allows watch(), and the BC-020 replacement in v15-breaking-changes.md matches the new wording.

The snippets type-check against stream-chat@10.0.0-rc.22, and Prettier passes.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Updated migration guidance to preserve compatible APIs and make only necessary changes.
    • Clarified when to use channel.watch() versus ensureWatched(), including already-watched, in-progress, and members-only channel scenarios.
    • Documented that previously implicit channel watching should be handled by application code.
    • Added guidance for client.channel() usage and v10 member and custom-data input formats.

Section 5 prescribed rewriting every channel an app creates into
`client.channelManager.ensure(...).ensureWatched()`. Apps that already call
`client.channel(...)` + `await channel.watch()` before rendering need no
change: `client.channel()` is shorthand for `channelManager.ensure()`, and
`watch()` takes the same options as `ensureWatched()`. The only edit at
those call sites is the stream-chat v10 input shape (`members` as
`{ user_id }` objects, custom fields under `custom`), which is a type fix:
the API still accepts plain ids at runtime.

- split section 5 by whether the app already watched the channel
- add a "change only what is broken" rule to the source-of-truth section
- soften the silent-break row and the `watchers` note to allow `watch()`
- align the BC-020 replacement in v15-breaking-changes.md

Found while migrating the website-react-examples demo apps, where an agent
following the guide rewrote working `client.channel()` + `watch()` code.

📝 Walkthrough

The migration guides clarify compatible code retention and update channel watching and initialization guidance for v15. They document watch() and ensureWatched(), watched-channel behavior, and v10 channel input shapes.

Layer / File(s) Summary
Migration guidance and watch options

The guide recommends keeping compatible code and making only necessary migration edits. It documents watch() and ensureWatched() for channel watching.
Channel initialization and input shapes
ai-docs/ai-migration-v14-v15.md, ai-docs/v15-breaking-changes.md
The guides explain when channels need watching before rendering, when to use the surviving ensureWatched() instance, where to pass watch options, and how v10 member and custom input shapes apply.

The migration guide may overstate that channels from queryChannels are always watched. A developer who disables watching could skip the required watch step and get no live updates. This is a small wording fix and does not block merging.

What to change depends on whether the app already watched the channel itself:

- **Channels from `ChannelList` or any `queryChannels` call arrive watched.** Nothing changes for them.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Scope the queryChannels watching claim.

queryChannels supports watch: false; the public contract lists this option and states that false disables subscriptions. (getstream.io) The guide also documents this for search results at Line 655. Therefore, “any queryChannels call arrive watched” is false. An app can omit the required watch step and receive no live updates.

Suggested wording
-- **Channels from `ChannelList` or any `queryChannels` call arrive watched.**
+- **Channels from `ChannelList` or `queryChannels` calls with watching enabled arrive watched.**

Comment thread ai-docs/v15-breaking-changes.md Outdated
…olves with

Correction to the previous commit. `client.channel(type, { members })` +
`await channel.watch()` is not safe in v10: once the server assigns the id,
the client may already hold a channel for that cid (event routing can store
it while the request is in flight), so the created instance is marked
superseded (`supersededBy`, `watchStatus: NotWatching`) and receives no
events. `ensureWatched()` resolves with the surviving instance; `watch()`
resolves with the response. ChatView swaps superseded channels, so this
bites apps that hold the channel themselves.

Reproduced in the website-react-examples team app: a DM created from a user
search with watch() never received the other user's message; with the
instance from ensureWatched() it did.

- section 5: unchanged watch() only for channels created by id; members-only
channels keep client.channel() but render ensureWatched()'s instance
- the DM example now uses ensureWatched()'s returned instance
- silent-break table: add the "just-created DM never updates" row
- BC-020: same split
