Summary

When the Slack app isn't in the alert channel yet, SlackWebMessagingIntegration gets not_in_channel from chat.postMessage. It joins the channel, but _handle_send_err then drops through to the final raise MessagingIntegrationError("Failed to send a message to channel - ..."). Because of that, the retry right after it (return self._send_message(...)) never runs. The first alert sent to a new public channel is reported as failed, and edr monitor exits 1, even though the app has just joined and could have sent it.

The retry was also missing reply_broadcast, so a threaded reply sent again after a join would have lost the setting.

Fix

  • _handle_send_err now returns after a successful join instead of raising.
  • _send_message sends the message again with the same thread_ts and reply_broadcast.
  • The retry passes joined_channel=True, so a second not_in_channel raises the normal error instead of trying to join again in a loop.

channel_not_found and every other Slack error still raise exactly as before.

Tests

New tests/unit/messages/messaging_integrations/test_slack_web.py (mocked WebClient, real SlackApiError responses):

  • not_in_channel then success: joins once, posts twice, returns the posted message context.
  • A reply retried after a join keeps thread_ts and reply_broadcast=True.
  • not_in_channel twice: joins once, then raises MessagingIntegrationError (no loop).
  • channel_not_found: raises without joining.

On master (e34d853) the first three fail: the second chat_postMessage call never happens (assert 1 == 2). With this change all four pass. Full unit suite: 485 passed. black / isort (--profile black) / flake8 / mypy / typos are clean on the changed files.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Slack messages can now be delivered when the app needs to join a channel first. The message is retried with its original content, thread, and broadcast settings.
    • Replies retain their channel, attachments, and formatting when retried. Messages still report an error when the channel cannot be found or delivery fails again after joining.

When chat.postMessage fails with not_in_channel, SlackWebMessagingIntegration
joins the channel but then raises MessagingIntegrationError anyway, so the
retry below it never runs and the alert is reported as failed. Return after a
successful join so the message is sent again, keep thread_ts and
reply_broadcast on the retry, and only join once per message.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Slack message sending now joins a channel after a not_in_channel error and retries the message once. The retry preserves thread and broadcast settings. Tests cover successful retries and send errors.

Layer / File(s) Summary
Join and retry Slack messages
elementary/messages/messaging_integrations/slack_web.py, tests/unit/messages/messaging_integrations/test_slack_web.py
_send_message tracks whether it has attempted a join. _handle_send_err joins only when allowed. Tests cover one retry, preservation of reply options, and errors after a repeated not_in_channel or channel_not_found.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to b21e4

The retry preserves the original message and reply settings, and the tests cover the retry and error cases. No actionable issue remains apparent, so the change is ready to merge after normal checks.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to b21e4

The retry is bounded and preserves the original message options. It also makes delivery to newly joined public channels effective, so the risk depends on who may choose an alert’s channel. No unauthorized delivery has been established.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · inferred: Metadata-selected public channels can now receive an alert after the app joins them. No destination authorization check is visible in the inspected routing and send path; whether this crosses a trust boundary depends on who can set alert metadata.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Effective new delivery is bounded to public channels visible and joinable by the configured Slack app, but is not necessarily bounded to the configured default channel when metadata routing is enabled. No cross-workspace or cross-tenant reachability is established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — If someone with less authority than the Slack app can set alert model or test channel metadata, that choice can now cause an alert to be posted after the app joins the chosen public channel. The evidence does not establish such an actor or an unauthorized delivery.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Destination selection can force the configured channel, channel lookup for joining is public-only, and repeated not_in_channel and channel_not_found errors do not trigger further joins. The inspected path shows no separate channel allowlist.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The local retry guard prevents an error loop but does not coordinate independent sends. Any requirement to deduplicate concurrent joins or repeated logical alerts remains unestablished.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — If alert metadata may be edited by a less-trusted role, enforce the intended channel policy at destination selection—for example, restrict eligible channels or require the configured-channel override.

Assert the retry request arguments.

The fixed second chat_postMessage response does not inspect request arguments. The reply test checks only thread_ts and reply_broadcast, so a retry with different channel, blocks, or attachments can still pass. Compare these fields with the first call and assert the channel is CHANNEL_NAME.

Applied the nitpick in b21e41d. The reply test now checks that the retried chat_postMessage sends the same channel (CHANNEL_NAME), blocks and attachments as the first call, and it still checks thread_ts and reply_broadcast. test_slack_web.py: 3 failed on the master slack_web.py and 4 passed with the fix. tests/unit/messages: 203 passed. black, isort and flake8 are clean.
