Summary

  • The archivist starts its deep dive (read the cited documents in full, answer from the text) on a NEED_TO_READ [N] line the prompt now asks for in every language. Before, it only recognised the English "need to read", so a German household got "Ich müsste [1] detailliert lesen…" as the final answer.
  • The prompt says a summary that does not mention a detail is a reason to defer, not to answer "no" (the Duff policy exclusion case).
  • The marker is removed before the answer reaches the chat. English deferrals, the single deep dive and one-pass answers behave as before.

The 0.4.0 version of #269: the same commit on release/0.4.0, which the rig runs. The touched files are identical on both branches.

Squash merge: one change.

Still open: the rig check on a German stack (ssh famstack-e2e, Documents Room as Marge). Whether Qwen3.5-9B writes the marker line and defers on the policy question is not yet verified. Questions to ask:

  1. "Wie ist die Telefonnummer von Barts Schule?" (expect 555-0134)
  2. "Ist Autofahren unter Einfluss von Duff laut unserer Versicherung erlaubt?" (expect: not covered, with the exclusion)
  3. "Wann ist der erste Elternabend?" (expect one pass, no "📖" status)

The three replies go in a comment here.

Known gap: if the model writes only the marker line without a sentence and the deep dive also defers, the answer line is empty above the sources.

A question whose answer is only in a document's text never got the
real answer in a non-English household. The deep dive starts when the
first answer defers, and the bot recognised a deferral only by the
English phrase "need to read". A German household got the deferral in
German, so the archivist posted it as the answer and stopped. The
model also answered "no" or "cannot be determined" when a short
summary did not mention the detail asked for.

- The synthesis prompt asks for a `NEED_TO_READ [N]` line after the
deferral sentence, written the same in every language. The bot
starts the deep dive on it and removes it before the family sees
the answer. The English phrase still counts.
- A new prompt rule: a summary that does not mention a detail is a
reason to defer, not evidence that the document lacks it.

Fixes: e12ade2 ("feat(archivist): natural-language questions get a synthesized answer")
