Stream text/event-stream responses instead of buffering them - #413
victorcuena wants to merge 1 commit into
Conversation
OpenApiValidationFilter wraps every validated response in a ContentCachingResponseWrapper, which keeps the body (and ignores flushes) until the request completes. For Server-Sent Events this means the client receives every event at once, at the end, even though event-stream bodies are never validated (only JSON, XML and HTML are). The response wrapper now writes and flushes straight through once the content type is text/event-stream, and keeps caching every other response. Preserve streaming when the content type is set after output acquisition.
If code obtains the output stream before setting text/event-stream, this method returns the caching stream. Later writes through that stream remain cached, even after the content type changes. The asynchronous filter path does not copy those bytes to the response, so the SSE client does not receive them. The writer path has the same problem. Select a delegate that checks the content type when it writes, or otherwise handle this permitted call order.

Match the complete SSE media type before bypassing the cache.
startsWith("text/event-stream") also matches text/event-streaming. A response with that non-SSE content type can therefore write directly to the underlying response while leaving the cache empty. When an application-provided TrafficSelector allows response validation, the interceptor passes an empty body to OpenApiRequestValidator, which can report a false response-body violation and return HTTP 500 when response violations are configured to fail requests.
Restrict the check to the exact media type, with optional parameters:

Problem
OpenApiValidationFilterwraps every validated response in aContentCachingResponseWrapper. That wrapper keeps the body in memory and ignoresflushBuffer()untilcopyBodyToResponse()runs at the end of the request. For Server-Sent Events (
SseEmitter,text/event-stream), the client therefore receives every event at once when the stream completes, so it doesn't stream at all. The body is never validated anyway, because only JSON, XML and HTML responses are. This goes against the library's documented intent to avoid caching streams. We hit this in care-backend (CAP-1150): the Zendesk copilot's chat reply arrived in one piece. The only service-side workaround is adding the path to
excluded-paths, which also turns off request validation for it.Fix
EventStreamAwareContentCachingResponseWrapperextendsContentCachingResponseWrapperand writes and flushes straight through to the real response once the content type istext/event-stream. Every other response is cached exactly as before, andContentCachingWrapperFactorynow builds this wrapper.Request validation is unaffected.
getCachingResponsestill finds the wrapper (WebUtils.getNativeResponsematches the subclass), and for an event stream the interceptor already skips response-body validation because of the content type.Tests
EventStreamAwareContentCachingResponseWrapperTest: JSON is still cached until copied; event-stream writes reach the response immediately, through both the output stream and the writer, and flushes commit it.EventStreamIntegrationTest: anSseEmitterendpoint behind the real filter delivers its first event before the stream completes. This test fails without the fix../gradlew check: all 104 tests pass.checkstyleTestFixturesfails intest:openapi-webandtest:openapi-webflux, identically onmain.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
