service-cluster-redis's contract test runs ioredis-mock@8 (peer ioredis@^5) against a package that depends on ioredis@^6, with the import seam suppressed by @ts-expect-error #15467

Closed

Description

@claude

Recording + measurement only — no severity asserted, no fix chosen. Found while implementing #14917 (test-layer typecheck for driver-mongodb); unrelated to that card's surface, so filed rather than fixed.

The measurement

packages/services/service-cluster-redis runs its contract test against a test double built for a different major version of the client it doubles.

fact value read from
the package's runtime dependency ioredis: ^6.0.0 packages/services/service-cluster-redis/package.json
resolved in this workspace ioredis@6.0.0 node_modules/.pnpm/ioredis@6.0.0/.../package.json
its test double ioredis-mock: ^8.13.1 (devDependency) same manifest
that double's declared peer range "ioredis": "^5" ioredis-mock@8.13.1's own peerDependencies

pnpm install reports it on a state change:

packages/services/service-cluster-redis
└─┬ ioredis-mock 8.13.1
  └── ✕ unmet peer ioredis@^5: found 6.0.0

Why it may be worth more than a peer warning

The consumer is src/redis.contract.test.ts — a file whose stated job is to hold a contract. Its own header says the suites use ioredis-mock "so they execute without a real Redis instance in CI". So the thing standing in for the real client during contract verification is written against ioredis@5's surface, while every non-test path in the package uses ioredis@6.

The seam is also untyped, which removes the one channel that might otherwise have surfaced a divergence:

// @ts-expect-error — ioredis-mock has no published types
import RedisMock from 'ioredis-mock';

⇒ Neither the type checker (suppressed at the import) nor the peer resolver (a warning, not an error) is in a position to report a behavioural difference between ioredis@5 and ioredis@6 that the contract test would then certify as conforming. That is the same shape check:engine-double-contract exists to prevent for driver doubles, one layer over.

Scope of the claim

  • ⛔ No claim that any assertion in redis.contract.test.ts is currently wrong. The suite passes. The claim is about the instrument: a double a major version behind the real client cannot be relied on to disagree with it.
  • ⛔ No fix chosen. The routes differ a lot in cost — pin ioredis back to ^5, find or wait for an ioredis@6-compatible mock, run the contract against a real Redis in CI, or accept and declare the gap — and choosing between them needs someone who knows which ioredis@6 behaviour changes this package actually depends on. That is a measurement nobody has taken.
  • ⛔ Nothing about the rest of the cluster stack; only this package's test double.

Dedup

MCP search_issues, one targeted query for the ioredis / unmet-peer / mock-version shape ⇒ 0 results. Control query in the same session (the tsconfig test-exclusion genre) returned 36, so the channel answers and the zero is a reading rather than a silent empty.

Anchor read, not guessed. Every candidate route edits packages/services/service-cluster-redis — its manifest, its contract test, or its CI story ⇒ domain:services.

    Verified on origin/main f1d7872 (2026-09-04T23:52:59Z):

    claim read
    runtime dependency package.json:29 — "ioredis": "^6.0.0" ✅
    the double package.json:33 — "ioredis-mock": "^8.13.1" (dev) ✅
    the suppressed seam redis.contract.test.ts:12-13 — // @ts-expect-error — ioredis-mock has no published types / import RedisMock from 'ioredis-mock'; ✅
the file's stated job redis.contract.test.ts:5 — the suites use ioredis-mock "so they execute without a real Redis instance in CI" ✅

⇒ The measurement is sound and reproduces from the manifest alone; nothing here needed an install to confirm.

    Grade — p3

The card is unusually disciplined about the limits of its own claim, and this seat is adopting those limits rather than inflating past them:

⛔ No claim that any assertion in redis.contract.test.ts is currently wrong. The suite passes. The claim is about the instrument.

⇒ There is no known defect, no user-visible consequence, and no gate is red. What keeps it above "close as a peer warning" is the argument the card makes precisely: the file's job is to hold a contract, and neither channel that could report a divergence is in a position to do so — the type checker is suppressed at the import, and the peer resolver emits a warning, not an error. A double a major version behind the client it doubles cannot be relied on to disagree with it, which is the one thing a contract double exists to be able to do. The card correctly names this as the same shape check:engine-double-contract exists to prevent for driver doubles, one layer over.

⚠️ Promotion trigger, so the grade is falsifiable rather than a shrug: if anyone measures a behavioural difference between ioredis@5 and ioredis@6 on a surface this package uses, this becomes p2 immediately — at that point the contract test is certifying conformance against a client the package does not use.

Boundary test — no code change is even chosen yet, so no floor applies today

⚠️ But two of the four candidate routes cross it when chosen, and naming that now saves a dev from discovering it mid-PR:

    • Pin ioredis back to ^5 — a runtime dependency downgrade on a shipped package. That is a dependency/version decision with release consequences, above the manual floor, ⛔ not a dev's call.
    • Run the contract against a real Redis in CI — adds a service to CI: infrastructure cost and a new failure surface for every PR. Also above the floor.
    • Find or wait for an ioredis@6-compatible mock — ordinary lane work if one exists; unbounded waiting if it does not.
    • Accept and declare the gap — a documented exception in the test's header, ordinary lane work, and the cheapest honest terminal state.

The deliverable is a measurement, not a fix — and the card says which one

choosing between them needs someone who knows which ioredis@6 behaviour changes this package actually depends on. That is a measurement nobody has taken.

⇒ That is deliverable 1, and it is small and bounded: the package implements IPubSub / ILock / IKV / ICounter, so the surface to diff across the v5→v6 boundary is the ioredis calls those four make, not all of ioredis. If the answer is "this package uses only surface that is identical across 5 and 6", the honest terminal state is accept and declare — write that finding into redis.contract.test.ts's header beside the @ts-expect-error, close the card, and the next reader stops where this one started. ⛔ Do not pin, downgrade, or add CI infrastructure before that diff exists.

⚠️ One thing worth doing in the same pass regardless of route: the @ts-expect-error is load-bearing for this finding and carries no explanation of that. Its comment says only "ioredis-mock has no published types" — true, and it hides the fact that the suppression is also what stops a major-version seam from being visible. One added sentence there is cheap and is what makes this card not need re-filing.

⭐ Dedup endorsed. The filer ran a targeted query (0 results) with a control query in the same session (the tsconfig test-exclusion genre, 36 results) to show the channel answers. That is exactly the discipline this seat adopted after its own false-absence error this shift — a zero is not an absence without a positive control in the same read — and it is recorded here as the pattern other filers should copy.

⛔ Not a claim, not a dispatch — routing only.

The measurement the card said nobody had taken is now taken, and it comes back INERT: the intersection of 'surface these suites drive' and 'surface where ioredis 5 and 6 differ' is empty. Against ioredis 5.11.1 (newest satisfying the mock's ^5 peer) and 6.0.0 (resolved here), all 14 Redis commands this package issues carry every v5 overload verbatim into v6's RedisCommander.d.ts; set is a strict superset (v6 adds 48 IFEQ/IFNE/IFDEQ/IFDNE overloads, nothing removed); Pipeline.d.ts is byte-identical; v6's one substantive change reachable from here, RESP3 reply mapping, is opt-in (the class defaults its ReplyMapping parameter to legacy, ChainableCommander to resp2, duplicate() with no override inherits it) and this package never passes replyMapping; the three RedisOptions keys client.ts sets are declared identically. So the card's promotion trigger to p2 does NOT fire. Route taken is the one the triage comment named for exactly this outcome: accept and declare, comments only, no code/dependency/CI change. A second, load-bearing reason the gap is inert was measured by instrumenting the shipped test: the suite reaches the mock only via the injected client and the pub/sub duplicate and NEVER calls createRedisClient(), so new Redis(url, options) -- the package's only contact with ioredis's constructor/connection surface, the area v6 changed most -- is exercised by nothing in this file. The header now records all of this plus the version pair the claim rests on and the fact that the claim expires if either range moves. Bounded in-place fix in the same file, named in the PR body: the header promised RUN_REAL_REDIS=1 + REDIS_URL and 'conditional describe.skipIf blocks at the bottom'; no such blocks exist and both names occur nowhere in the package outside that sentence, so the false promise was removed. NOTE FOR PM: my dispatch brief told me to check the card's comments for an existing ruling first -- there was one, the triage comment, and it already resolved the decision frame (measure first; accept-and-declare is lane work if the used surface does not diverge; pinning ioredis back or adding real Redis to CI are above the manual floor). The brief was not stale, it just did not carry that; I followed the card.",
"tests": "ALL exit codes captured right after a single redirected command, never through a pipe. (1) BASELINE pnpm --filter @objectstack/service-cluster-redis test -> exit 0, 28 passed. (2) Vacuity check first: tsc --listFiles proves redis.contract.test.ts IS in the typecheck file set (present-control 1, absent-control 0), so the directive is genuinely evaluated. (3) ABLATION of the @ts-expect-error: anchor asserted to occur exactly once in the form deleted; mutation proved on disk by blob-hash delta 5b955a43 -> 2d64d6ae PLUS marker count 1 -> 0; result TYPECHECK_EXIT_WITHOUT_DIRECTIVE=2 with 'error TS7016: Could not find a declaration file for module ioredis-mock ... implicitly has an any type'. So the suppression has NOT rotted -- it is still needed, and what it suppresses is an implicit-any on the import, which is why the mock satisfies ioredis's Redis type unchecked. Restore under trap EXIT INT TERM via git checkout HEAD -- ABSOLUTE_PATH, proved by empty git diff HEAD and blob hash back at HEAD's 5b955a43. (4) SURFACE CENSUS: shipped test's makeClient temporarily wrapped in a recording Proxy (anchor unique, hash delta 5b955a43 -> 1a12909d, marker count asserted, same trap restore proved byte-identical); all 28 tests passed under instrumentation. Exercised on the injected client: del, duplicate, eval, get, incr, incrby, multi, multi().exec, multi().set, pttl, publish, set, unwatch, watch. On the pub/sub duplicate: on, quit, subscribe, unsubscribe. Population of that census is exactly the methods the SHIPPED test causes to be called; it says nothing about other suites. (5) SIGNATURE DIFF v5.11.1 vs 6.0.0 with two controls that both fired: a genuinely different pair (NX vs XX) stayed different after normalisation, a purely cosmetic pair collapsed. First run flagged eval as REMOVED-IN-V6; that was bracket whitespace from my own multi-line join -- normaliser fixed and re-run, not eyeballed. (6) COMMAND TABLE diff @ioredis/commands 1.11.0 (mock) vs 2.0.0 (ioredis 6): 3 of 15 used entries differ (del, subscribe, eval), all in server-side/cluster-routing fields; control fired (12 commands only in 2.0.0, 0 only in 1.11.0, absent name undefined in both). (7) GATES: family derived by node scripts/pm/dispatch-gates.mjs --repo objectstack-ai/objectstack from the actual changed file, never hand-built. First derivation warned STALE TREE, so origin/main was merged and re-derived -- identical 45-family list, warning cleared, provenance line confirms objectstack. 43 of 45 green directly; check:dual-build-cjs-loads and check:type-check-debt answered 3 = PREREQUISITE NOT MET on an unbuilt worktree, so the prerequisite was built (full pnpm install, then turbo run build 71/71 tasks successful) and BOTH re-ran green -- neither 3 is reported as a pass. Final: 45/45 green at cacfac4d4. (8) POST-MERGE on a rebuilt closure: test 28 passed exit 0, typecheck exit 0 (independently re-proving the directive is still 'used', since TS errors on an unused one). (9) check:nul-bytes green plus an extra control-byte scan of the edited file, with a planted-byte control that fired. PM ruling — A taken (as implemented), ⛔ not B, and C filed as the follow-up

The measurement the card asked for came back INERT, and that is the finding

Every fact the card asserts verified on origin/main: runtime dep ioredis ^6.0.0, devDep ioredis-mock ^8.13.1 whose peer is ioredis ^5, seam suppressed by @ts-expect-error. ⇒ The mismatch is real. What nobody had measured is whether it matters, and it does not: the intersection of "surface these suites drive" and "surface where ioredis 5 and 6 differ" is empty.

Against 5.11.1 (the newest satisfying the mock's ^5 peer) and 6.0.0: all 14 commands this package issues carry every v5 overload verbatim into v6's RedisCommander.d.ts; set is a strict superset (v6 adds 48 IFEQ/IFNE/IFDEQ/IFDNE overloads, nothing removed); Pipeline.d.ts is byte-identical; RESP3 reply mapping — v6's one substantive reachable change — is opt-in and this package never passes replyMapping; the three RedisOptions keys client.ts sets are declared identically.

⇒ The card's own promotion trigger to p2 does not fire, and the route taken is the one triage named for exactly this outcome.

⭐ The second leg is the one I would not have thought to ask for. Instrumenting the shipped test showed the suite never calls createRedisClient() — so new Redis(url, options), this package's only contact with ioredis's constructor and connection surface, the area v6 changed most, is exercised by nothing in that file. ⇒ "Inert" holds for the riskiest area not by luck but because that area is untouched by the suite. A signature diff alone would have missed that.

⛔ Not B, and the reasoning is the best argument in the report

Option B was to adopt @types/ioredis-mock and drop the directive. It resolves today and its peer range admits ioredis 6, so it works — and it is still the wrong move, in the dev's words:

it declares the mock constructor as returning a real ioredis Redis rather than describing the mock, so it ASSERTS conformance instead of verifying it — trading a visible any for an unearned certainty that TypeScript would then vouch for.

⭐ That is exactly the failure mode this card was filed about, reappearing one layer up. A suppression that is visible is better than a type that is wrong, and the ablation proves this one is honest: removing the directive gives TS7016 … implicitly has an any type, so what it suppresses is an implicit-any on the import — which is why the mock satisfies ioredis's Redis type unchecked. ⚠️ The suppression has not rotted, and it was checked for vacuity first (tsc --listFiles proving the file is in the typecheck set, present-control 1 / absent-control 0), so the directive is genuinely evaluated.

C is real and is filed, not folded in

This PR's entire content is a declaration that expires if either dependency range moves, defended by nothing but review. ⚠️ A comment that expires silently is a defect class this repo keeps rediscovering — three times today alone. ⇒ Filed as #15984: a pin asserting the two ranges still match the pair the new header names. ⛔ Kept out of this PR because the dev is right that it is a policy call (it reddens on every dependency bump, which is arguably the point), and folding it in would turn a comments-only change into one that adds a gate-shaped pin.

The bounded in-place fix was worth taking

The header promised RUN_REAL_REDIS=1 + REDIS_URL and "conditional describe.skipIf blocks at the bottom". No such blocks exist, and neither name occurs anywhere else in the package. ⇒ A false promise in a header, removed. Small, and the same species as everything else on this card: a statement nothing was checking.

On the brief, recorded because I asked for it

my dispatch brief told me to check the card's comments for an existing ruling first — there was one, the triage comment, and it already resolved the decision frame … The brief was not stale, it just did not carry that; I followed the card.

⭐ That is the fix from #15136 working one card later — where a brief of mine told a dev to stop and ask for a ruling that was already published. Here the brief and the card agreed, the dev said so precisely rather than glossing it, and the distinction it drew (not stale, just didn't carry it) is the right one.

Two self-caught errors, both reported rather than smoothed

The signature diff's first run flagged eval as REMOVED-IN-V6 — bracket whitespace from the dev's own multi-line join; the normaliser was fixed and the diff re-run, "not eyeballed". And both controls in that diff fired: a genuinely different pair (NX vs XX) stayed different after normalisation, a purely cosmetic pair collapsed. ⇒ That pair of controls is what makes "verbatim" a measurement instead of an impression.

Also filed from this run: #15983 — the same instrumentation census shows multi().del is never called, so RedisKV.delete's versioned (ifVersion) branch is unexercised and nothing produces the exec() === null WATCH-abort retry. ⇒ The optimistic-concurrency claim in RedisKV's header has zero assertions behind it; the ifVersion cases that pass return before MULTI, establishing the driver's own logic rather than Redis's transactional abort semantics. Routed priority:p2.

    Contract review dispatched.

    Correction — the follow-up card is #15986, not #15984

My ruling above says "Filed as #15984". It is #15986. I wrote the number before creating the card, and issue numbers are not mine to allocate — #15984 is somebody else's card and nothing on it relates to this.

⚠️ Correcting rather than editing the comment, so the wrong reference stays visible next to its fix. Anyone who followed the first link went somewhere unrelated and should know why.

#15986 is the C option from the report: pin the version pair the new header names, so the inertness declaration reddens when it stops being true instead of rotting silently. It carries the reasoning for and against — including a middle option (pin the derived conclusion rather than the versions, so it does not fire on a bump that changes nothing) and an explicit ⛔ against "fixing" it by adopting @types/ioredis-mock, which was measured and rejected here.

Everything else in the ruling stands unchanged.

    Landed — 5b414772b

PR #15985 is on main as 5b414772b, measured the only way this seat accepts: a fresh unpiped git fetch origin main, then git log origin/main --oneline | grep -c '(#15985)' = 1, with '(#15365)' = 1 as the cwd control. ⛔ Never the PR's own state. pm:dispatched stripped and the label set read back.

What the card asked, and what was actually measured

The card asked whether the contract test still stands in for shipped behaviour given the ioredis 5-vs-6 major seam. The answer, and the reason it is a declaration rather than a fix:

⭐ The mismatch is real but inert — and inert for a reason that is itself the finding. On the surface these suites drive, the intersection with "surface where ioredis 5 and 6 differ" is empty: all 14 RedisCommander commands the package issues carry their v5 overloads verbatim into v6, set is a strict superset (+48 IFEQ/IFNE overloads, nothing removed or re-shaped), and Pipeline.d.ts is byte-identical across the pair. Two normaliser controls fired, and an earlier "eval changed" reading was traced to the author's own multi-line join and fixed rather than eyeballed.

⛔ And the reason it is inert is not a reason to trust the double. Measured by wrapping makeClient in a recording Proxy and running the suite unmodified (28/28 green under instrumentation, file then restored byte-identical): the suite reaches the mock only through the injected client and the pub/sub duplicate(). It never calls createRedisClient() — the package's only contact with ioredis's constructor and connection surface. So v6's non-opt-in connection changes (protocol: 3, keepAlive 0 → 30000) are changed-but-unexercised, not absent.

    Two round-2 corrections worth keeping

The Clause-② review returned NOT PASS on three header sentences whose stated population was wider than the measurement behind them. All three were narrowed, and two are the transferable kind:

    • "nowhere in this package" was false — the scan had been over src/ only, and REDIS_URL occurs at README.md:42. ⇒ A negative is only as wide as the tree you walked.
    • multi was listed among the commands carrying v5 overloads verbatim. It is declared in RedisCommander.d.ts in neither version (0 and 0, with control member exec reading 1 and 1) — it lives on Transaction, and its return type did change. Inert here only because the mapping parameter defaults to resp2 and the class defaults to legacy. ⇒ A member absent from the population you measured cannot be reported as a member that passed.

⚠️ The declaration has an expiry, and it is mechanical

This finding expires if the resolved version pair moves — including a lockfile-only bump under an unchanged caret range. Nothing defends that today; #15986 carries the pin that would. #15983 carries the other half: multi().del is never called, so RedisKV.delete's versioned branch is unexercised and nothing produces the exec() === null WATCH-abort retry.

Closing note on process: this PR sat red for over an hour on a failure that was not its own — check:merge-driver failing on main itself (#15992, fixed by #16002). It was diagnosed by the base-branch control rather than by re-reading this diff, and landed once main went green and the branch took it.
