[finding] Two more copies of the fetch-less driver-free merge-tree probe misread a missing object as a conflict: platform-readings.md (the seat's conflict proof) and migrations/entries/README.md ("Reproduce any row") #20970
Description
Filing gate: ① — a reproducible defect with named locations. This card closes out the family: every remaining copy of the probe recipe that #19069 fixes in AGENTS.md and scripts/pm/os-regen-merge.sh (PR #20968). Filed by the domain:devx seat 2 PM (session_01JAhu8u8QfBvRjVZDox7CP9, seat post #20163) from the out_of_scope_findings of #19069's dev report 5921577393. ⛔ Not a claim; routing and grading are triage's.
The defect
A driver-free merge-tree probe must hold both commits it merges. A throwaway clone made with git clone --shared from this fleet's shallow primary checkout writes no objects/info/alternates. It carries only what refs/heads/** reach, so origin/main and a fetched PR head are missing. merge-tree then exits 1, the exit code of a real conflict, prints no tree id, and writes not something we can merge on stderr. A clean head reads as conflicted.
PR #20968 replaces the recipe with "clone, then fetch . BASE:refs/b HEAD:refs/h, then merge refs/b refs/h" and names the reading: exit 1 with no tree id is a missing object, never a conflict. Two copies outside that PR's file surface still teach the fetch-less form.

Reader / reach | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | .claude/skills/pm-dispatch/references/platform-readings.md:35, fed origin/main and a fetched PR ref by :30 |
every PM seat proving a conflict before a merge-conflict dispatch (named producer: the seat protocol) | The mechanism was measured on #19069 (5746908411, 5825804487, report 5921577393). This seat's own reading on this checkout, at card creation: the fetch-less form answers exit 1 + merge-tree: origin/main - not something we can merge. The fetch form answers exit 0 + tree 57ee7b494198. The same base and head were used for both. |
| 2 | packages/spec/src/migrations/entries/README.md:146-147 (git clone --shared --no-local . /tmp/driverless, then merge-tree --write-tree --messages BRANCH_A BRANCH_B) |
anyone reproducing a migration-entry merge row (named producer: the README's "Reproduce any row") | The dev measured this on a synthetic non-shallow repo (report 5921577393), so it is a second failure mode. --no-local leaves no alternates, and a non-bare clone lands the source's branches as origin/BRANCH_A. The command as written answers exit 1, merge-tree: BRANCH_A - not something we can merge / Did you mean this? origin/BRANCH_A. The control with origin/ prefixes answers exit 0 + tree. |
Enumeration pin. git grep -nE 'clone[^]*--shared|--no-local' origin/main -- . ':!**/CHANGELOG.md'lists four copies at3693a1b`:
- the two above;
AGENTS.md:618andscripts/pm/os-regen-merge.sh:248, which PR docs(agents,os-regen-merge): the driver-free merge-tree probe fetches both commits #20968 fixes.
Once that PR and this card land, the same grep finds only copies that fetch both commits. Control: in the same grep scope, merge-tree hits 12 files, so a zero here is a reading, not a dead instrument.
Who acts
- Row 1: the owner of
.claude/**, a Tier S governed surface that is line-ratcheted. Align it with the header recipe in PR docs(agents,os-regen-merge): the driver-free merge-tree probe fetches both commits #20968, or point at it.⚠️ Serial: wait for PR docs(agents,os-regen-merge): the driver-free merge-tree probe fetches both commits #20968 to land, so the pointer names text that is onmain. - Row 2: the owner of
packages/spec/src/migrations/entries/**. The same two-leg proof applies: a clean pair gives exit 0 + tree, and a conflicting pair gives exit 1 + tree + path. - The two rows may split across lanes. That is triage's call.

Routing. This is the cross-domain exception path, with one claiming lane:
domain:devx, #19069's lane and the family's holder. Declared surfaces:.claude/skills/pm-dispatch/references/platform-readings.md(governed, so the maintainer's approval on the PR, under the governed rule);packages/spec/src/migrations/entries/README.md.Why blocked. PR #20968 (#19069, in flight) writes the canonical recipe (
fetch . BASE:refs/b HEAD:refs/h) and the reading ("exit 1 with no tree id is a missing object"). Both copies here take that wording verbatim once it lands. ⛔ No third phrasing. Why p3. It is prose that teaches a probe which misreads a clean head as conflicted. The seat protocol's copy is the more reached one, and a wrong conflict proof costs a dispatch.
Direction: replace both copies with #20968's recipe. Fix the README's second failure mode too (
--no-local, andorigin/-prefixed branch refs). Each copy gets the same exit-1-no-tree reading.Generated by Claude Code
