spec(data) 18.x: refuse a user field whose reference names an object other than sys_user, and resolve every user field to sys_user (the refusal half of #24808) #24952

Description

@objectstack-fleet

Filed by domain:spec seat 3 (seat post #18883) · baozhoutao · session session_01D6F9axfoPzR7t8G1J7Ytzz. It carries the deferred half of #24808, under the standing ruling 「甲」 (#6015 6292005854, rule 2). ⛔ Not a claim. Grade and routing are triage's. Target: the next protocol major (19.0).

Why it is deferred

#24808 was ruled A on #24854: enforce the declaration that a user field's target is fixed to sys_user. No ADR-0087 conversion is lossless here:

  • A lookup joins the referential delete walk (DELETE_SEMANTICS_REFERENCE_TYPES, objectql engine.ts), with a materialized deleteBehavior: set_null, while a user field sits outside it.
  • deleteBehavior has no "no action" value.
  • A converted field would also stop counting for sharing's fieldHoldsUsers.

So 18.x shipped only the loud half, in PR #24942 (e7befa7700): the @objectstack/lint advisory user-field-foreign-reference, and Field.user's reference marked @deprecated.

19.0 scope

  1. Refuse type: 'user' with a reference other than sys_user: a FieldSchema, or an ObjectSchema / ObjectExtensionSchema superRefine. The precedent is refuseForeignTreeReference in object.zod.ts. The message names the lookup spelling.
  2. referenceTargetOf (field-value.zod.ts) returns IMPLICIT_REFERENCE_TARGETS for user, whatever the carrier.
  3. Field.user's config drops reference (or types it 'sys_user') and writes sys_user after the spread.
  4. Delete the lint advisory, or keep it as an os lint echo.
  5. Add a D3 semantic migration entry: the surface is object.fields[].reference on type user, the replacement is lookup, and the reason is that a delete-behaviour judgement is owed. The breaking changeset carries Clause-②: yes (narrowing) and its ADR-0087 marker.
  6. Retire the two 18.x pins: field-value.test.ts (my_people) and the object-graph.test.ts explicit-carrier control. Also retire objectui's userCell.readGate-10535.test.tsx fixture (crm_member); re-read it at the current pin first.

Seam: spec:FieldSchema.reference on type user → runtime:referenceTargetOf (field-value.zod.ts) | renderer:objectui user cell.

Also noted. The reference-suite member validateObjectReferences runs at the runtime publish gate on flow and dataset snapshots only, so the 18.x advisory does not reach the object save door (Studio / REST /meta / MCP).

Dedupe

Dedupe words: user field reference not sys_user refusal 19, IMPLICIT_REFERENCE_TARGETS enforce, Field.user reference deprecated, user-field-foreign-reference. This is new: the 18.x half is #24808 (closed).

File surface (at origin/main 3b3830ca22 or later; stop on a breach and explain it in the report): packages/spec/src/data/field.zod.ts (Field.user writes sys_user after the spread; reference dropped or typed 'sys_user'), field-value.zod.ts (referenceTargetOf returns sys_user for user), the object/field refinement that refuses a foreign reference on type: 'user' (precedent refuseForeignTreeReference, object.zod.ts), an ADR-0087 D3 semantic entry, the @objectstack/lint advisory user-field-foreign-reference (deleted or kept as an echo), the 18.x pins it replaces, tests, generated artifacts and .changeset/24952-*.md.
Container & model: M, mode:subagent, model: default (no path-derived mandate)
Clause-②: no (narrowing: a user field naming an object other than sys_user is refused; ships now under the amended 「甲」, #6015 6303865025)
Responsibility: the deferred half of #24808 (ruled A on #24854), re-timed to 18.x
    Thread-read: none
Serial constraints cleared: this seat's #24808 landed; the dev re-checks open PRs touching field.zod.ts / field-value.zod.ts / object.zod.ts before opening its own. The PR owes a CONTRACT_REVIEW_TIER contract review.

Read on origin/main 3b3830ca22 at 2026-10-21T03:10Z: PR #24942 (e7befa7700) shipped the 18.x advisory; Field.user still spreads ...config after reference: 'sys_user'.

What the PR does: FieldSchema refuses a type user field whose reference names anything but sys_user (one issue at reference, naming the lookup spelling and deleteBehavior). referenceTargetOf answers sys_user for every user field. Field.user types reference as 'sys_user' and writes it after the spread. A D3 semantic entry user-field-foreign-reference-refused is added. The 24952 changeset now carries a line-initial `Metadata-protocol: narrowed` under the Clause-② line, names '@objectstack/lint': minor beside '@objectstack/spec': minor, and opens a 'Supersedes' paragraph withdrawing the user-field-foreign-reference advisory, the USER_FIELD_FOREIGN_REFERENCE export and its os explain entry before release. Why lint is named: AGENTS.md item 3 grades a protocol kind at least minor on a package the diff moves, and this diff moves packages/lint/src; and the 24808 entry writes its announcement into @objectstack/lint's CHANGELOG, so the withdrawal must land in that same CHANGELOG (AGENTS.md's CHANGELOG row: a correction anywhere else is one the reader never reaches). The versions do not change because of the fixed group (check-changeset-fixed: 73 packages in lockstep). Readers that follow the target (`$expand`, imports, seed loading, field paths) treated the field as a link to `probe_account`, while readers that branch on the type (the person picker, a `current_user` default, a sharing rule over the users a field holds) treated its values as users.\n- **FROM:** a `user` field with `reference` naming any object but `sys_user` parsed, and resolved to the named object.\n- **TO:** `FieldSchema` refuses it with an issue at `reference` that names the replacement, so `ObjectSchema`, `ObjectExtensionSchema`, `defineStack`, `os validate` and the metadata save door refuse it too. `referenceTargetOf` answers `sys_user` for every `user` field, whatever `reference` says, so a stored body saved before this release resolves to `sys_user` as well. `Field.user()`'s config types `reference` as `'sys_user'` and writes `sys_user` after the config spread.\n- **Unchanged:** a `user` field without `reference`, with `reference: 'sys_user'` or with a blank `reference`, and `Field.user()`'s output for every typed call.\n- **Fix:** change such a field to a `lookup` on the object it names, `{ type: 'lookup', reference: 'TARGET' }` (`Field.lookup('TARGET', …)`), and choose its `deleteBehavior` on purpose: a `lookup` defaults to `'set_null'` when the target record is deleted, which a `user` field never did. A `current_user` default is not legal on a `lookup` to an object other than `sys_user`. If a person was meant, drop `reference`.\n- **Why no automatic rewrite.** No ADR-0087 conversion can carry the change losslessly: a `lookup` joins the referential delete walk and `deleteBehavior` has no value that means \"leave it\". `objectstack migrate meta` reports the semantic entry `user-field-foreign-reference-refused` instead.\n\n**Supersedes the `user-field-foreign-reference` warning entry in this release.** That entry announced a `@objectstack/lint` advisory `user-field-foreign-reference`, the `USER_FIELD_FOREIGN_REFERENCE` export and its `os explain` entry, and said such a field would still parse. All three are withdrawn before release and never ship: a foreign `reference` on a `user` field is now refused by `FieldSchema` instead, so there is nothing left for the advisory to warn about.\n\n- **For `@objectstack/lint`:** no `user-field-foreign-reference` rule, no `USER_FIELD_FOREIGN_REFERENCE` export and no `RULE_EXPLANATIONS` entry for it. `OBJECT_REFERENCE_UNKNOWN` and every other export are unchanged. The refusal arrives as a `FieldSchema` issue at `reference`, not as a lint advisory.\n",

    Close-out — landed

    • PR feat(spec)!: refuse a user field whose reference names an object other than sys_user; every user field resolves to sys_user #25074 merged as 2069b81c26 (single-parent squash on main).
    • Patch-id verified: the merged commit's patch-id equals the reviewed head 1a4eb0cf80 (400d9a8597).
    • Contract review: PASS, record 6335846392 on the PR. Round 2's source diff is unchanged from the round-1 head bf738d1f99, file by file.
    • What shipped:
      • FieldSchema refuses a type: 'user' field whose reference names anything but sys_user.
      • referenceTargetOf answers sys_user for every user field, so a stored body saved before this release resolves to sys_user too.
      • Field.user() types reference as 'sys_user'.
      • The D3 semantic entry user-field-foreign-reference-refused is registered.
      • @objectstack/spec and @objectstack/lint are a BREAKING minor, Metadata-protocol: narrowed.
    • Release text: the pending .changeset/24808-user-field-foreign-reference-warning.md is left as it is on main (route B). This entry's Supersedes paragraph withdraws the advisory, the USER_FIELD_FOREIGN_REFERENCE export and the os explain entry 24808 announced, so both land in lint's CHANGELOG together.
    • Follow-up: fields: userCell gates by the authored reference of a user field, but objectstack now resolves every user field to sys_user (objectstack#24952) objectui#13305, where the user cell should treat a user field's person object as sys_user.
    • The claim on this card ends here. pm:dispatched removed.
