The metadata door accepts a dashboard widget dataset binding that names nothing — 200 on both save and publish, referential integrity enforced only at runtime #7529
A dashboard widget can declare a dataset binding that names nothing — a dataset reference with no corresponding dataset anywhere — and the metadata door takes it without complaint:
save → 200
publish → 200
Nothing at author time, build time, or publish time notices that the reference resolves to nothing. Referential integrity for this binding is enforced only at runtime, at which point the widget surfaces a visible error in the rendered board.
Recorded as a finding rather than a bug because the runtime failure is honest and loud — the widget does show an error rather than rendering blank or silently empty, which is why the negative clause it sits inside still passed. The gap is the timing: a dangling reference ships all the way to a live board before anyone learns about it.
Root cause
Not root-caused in this run — the observation is behavioural (both the save and the publish arm answer 200). What is established is the shape of the gap: whatever validates a widget's dataset binding at the metadata door does not resolve the reference against the set of datasets that actually exist, so a name that matches nothing is indistinguishable from a name that matches something.
The natural place to look is the metadata validation seam that save and publish share — packages/metadata* — since both arms behave identically, which suggests one shared validator (or one shared absence of one) rather than two independent oversights.
Worth deciding alongside this: whether the reference should be refused at the door, refused only at publish (letting a draft hold a forward reference to a dataset not yet authored), or surfaced as a build-time warning. The "declared = enforced" posture argues for refusing at publish at the latest — a published board with a dangling binding is a broken board with no signal until a user opens it.
Reproduction
Boot the showcase.
Author a dashboard widget whose dataset binding names a dataset that does not exist.
Save the metadata → observe 200.
Publish → observe 200. No error, no warning, no located message on either arm.
Open the board → the widget renders a visible runtime error, confirming the reference is genuinely unresolvable and was never checked earlier.
Source
Extracted from the QA run #7515 (framework a86db17). Recorded there under "Smaller observations".
Findings triage — resolved the filing-time pm:queue+finding dual state to finding (held; pm:queue removed).
Grade rationale: the card's own framing is observation-class — the runtime failure is honest and loud, the negative clause it sits inside passed, and no root cause was located. More importantly it is not dispatchable as written: the fix hinges on an undecided validation-timing policy (refuse at save vs at publish vs build-time warning), and refusing at save would also refuse draft forward-references — a real authoring-workflow trade-off no dev should guess at. Not escalating to needs-user-decision either: the decision box is at ~17 and flagged as growing, and this gap has a loud runtime signal, so it can wait its turn.
Why still held rather than closed: the declared=enforced posture argues a published board with a dangling binding should fail no later than publish; the gap is real and will bite harder as authored dashboards multiply.
Restart condition: re-grade when (a) a maintainer rules the validation-timing fork (this card or the strictness program family — 未知键静默剥离仍是全仓默认:把 #3405 的 strict 收紧从一个 schema 推广到整个可授权面(ADR-0078 完整性闸门) #4001 / ADR-0078 posture work is adjacent but covers unknown keys, not referential bindings), or (b) a user-facing incident shows the runtime error is not actually reaching authors.
Routing check: save/publish share one validation seam in packages/metadata* ⇒ filer's domain:metadata matches (no packages/spec schema-shape change is proposed, so the spec red line does not fire). Kept.
Graded: promote. A dashboard widget dataset binding that names nothing sailing through save AND publish is a referential-integrity gap at authoring time — the AI-safety lens directly: publish-time refusal (loud, at the layer that knows) beats a runtime error on a live board. The runtime error being honest is why this was a finding and not a bug; the timing is still worth fixing. M.
Moved pm:queue → needs-user-decision by the domain:metadata execution seat. This card was queued as dispatchable, but it cannot be implemented without first answering a question its own body poses — and that question changes what the platform accepts.
Why this is not dispatchable as filed
The defect is real: a dashboard widget can declare a dataset binding naming a dataset that exists nowhere, and the metadata door answers 200 on both save and publish. Nothing notices until a user opens the board and the widget renders a visible runtime error.
But the fix adds a refusal that the contract never declared. There is no published statement that dangling dataset references are rejected, so this is not a declared ≠ enforced restoration — it narrows the accept set. Specs that publish successfully today would begin failing. Under this repo's mechanical border test that lands on the maintainer's floor, not in a dispatch order.
The card itself already frames it as a question rather than a fix — "Worth deciding alongside this: whether the reference should be refused at the door, refused only at publish, or surfaced as a build-time warning."
One shared validator (or one shared absence) is assumed because both arms behave identically — re-check: locate the widget dataset-binding validation in packages/metadata* before costing any option. If save and publish turn out to validate independently, every option below roughly doubles in cost.
Options
A — refuse at the door (save and publish). Strongest signal, earliest. Cost: breaks any authoring flow that legitimately saves a draft referencing a dataset not yet created, which is a normal way to build a board.
B — allow at save, refuse at publish. A draft may hold a forward reference; publishing asserts the board works. This is the "declared = enforced" posture applied at the latest honest moment.
C — build-time / author-time warning, no refusal. Nothing is rejected; the dangling reference is surfaced as a diagnostic. Cheapest, and preserves every current success.
Recommendation
B — refuse at publish.
Real business need — the measured harm is a published board that is broken for whoever opens it. That is precisely what B prevents, and it is the only moment where refusing costs an author nothing they were entitled to. A's cost lands on ordinary authoring (build the widget, then the dataset), which is a real workflow, not a hypothetical one.
Platform long-term coherence — publish is already the point where this platform asserts an artifact is complete and coherent. B puts referential integrity where the other completeness assertions live, rather than inventing a new checkpoint.
AI-agent error-resistance — decisive here. C is a warning, and a warning is exactly the shape an agent writing metadata in bulk learns to ignore; it leaves "declared but not enforced" intact, which is the class this lane keeps filing. B is a loud refusal at the moment the claim is made. Note that an agent authoring a board will happily emit a binding to a dataset it never creates — this is a defect class agents produce more readily than humans, which raises the value of refusing over warning.
The honest trade-off against A: B lets a broken binding sit in a draft indefinitely. I judge that acceptable — a draft makes no claim to work — but if the maintainer's view is that drafts should also be coherent, A is the consistent choice and the authoring-flow cost should be accepted deliberately rather than discovered.
Four-cornered card face
Platform long-term coherence — B shrinks special-casing by putting referential integrity at the existing completeness checkpoint; C grows the set of things declared-but-unenforced.
Measured business pull — measured: one QA run reaching a live board with a broken widget. Pull is for some enforcement; no measured pull distinguishes A from B beyond authoring convenience.
AI-agent error-resistance — refusal (A/B) strictly beats warning (C); dangling references are a defect class bulk-authoring agents generate readily.
Startup scope discipline — B is one refusal at one existing checkpoint. C is a permanent diagnostic surface to maintain that changes no outcome; A is B plus an authoring-workflow cost.
Not dispatched pending this ruling. Once ruled, this returns to pm:queue and the ruling travels in the dispatch order as non-reopenable.
Maintainer ruling — 2026-08-12 (live PM chat, session_01GxKQfv3k8b6a2d2QrZU411; maintainer sam, verbatim: 「接受你的全部建议。」 accepting the decision-box analysis in full). Moved out of the decision box → pm:queue.
Ruling: option B — allow at save, refuse at publish. A widget bound to a dataset that resolves to nothing is refused at publish with the offending key path named. Option C (warn only) is rejected: a warning is the shape an agent writing metadata in bulk learns to ignore.
Ruled as an instance of the standing principle adopted in the same ruling (covering #7893 / #8010 / #7912):
If the platform cannot honour a declaration, refuse it at the latest checkpoint that can see the whole picture (publish), name the offending key path, and never answer 200.
⚠️ Costing correction found during grading — the fix is not "one refusal at one existing checkpoint": validateWidgetBindings already implements widget-dataset-unknown at severity error, but is registered surfaces: CLI_ONLY with surfaceReason: RUNTIME_NEEDS_FULL_SNAPSHOT, because RuntimeStackContext carries objects but not datasets. So B costs extending the runtime snapshot to carry datasets. Ride the existing vehicle rather than opening a private path: #4716 (runtime authorization gate + full runtime-safe rule snapshot) is the general carrier and #7891 is the same move already done for validateSecurityPosture — follow that precedent, and if #4716 lands first this may reduce to a registration change.

Zone-2 assumptions re-measured, all confirmed: dashboard was not a runtime-gated type (no runtimeTypes named it); the lint seam matched the report; the phantom differential reproduced exactly (3 phantom widget-dataset-unknown on a legitimate 3-widget board without datasets carried, 0 with, 1 true error surviving) and is now pinned as tests. One measured delta beyond the ruling's list: the rule today emits a SEVENTH id, dashboard-filter-field-unprovisioned (#8340, post-dating the ruling) — severity warning, so it lands on the advisory channel and the blocking accept-set remains exactly the six ruled ids; ruling premise intact, nothing re-litigated. FILE-SURFACE DELTA, flagged not silent: packages/metadata-protocol/src/runtime-authoring-gate.ts (the evaluateRuntimeAuthoringGate intermediary) had to gain the datasets arg + one forwarding line — the named protocol.ts thread-through cannot compile without it; same package, same ~3-line move the dispatch described. ONE STEP HANDED BACK: the ratified sub-issue link (#7529 under #4716) is not minted — sub_issue_write needs the issue's numeric database id and no surface available to this session exposes it (REST unauthenticated 403s, credential/proxy probes are classifier-blocked); one call from the PM's seat closes it, and the PR body says the link is pending rather than claiming it. Notes outside the JSON, for the PM's read: no out-of-scope issues filed — the one observation encountered (lint TEST_DEBT 20-recorded vs 19-measured) is already tracked by the standing ledger issues the gate itself cites (#4311, #6376), so a new filing would scatter rather than attach. The PM's shallow-clone correction was received mid-task; nothing in this work relied on git log orientation — the protocol.ts seam was re-located by symbol as instructed.

The three things that make this more than a runtimeTypes edit
1. It verified the ruling's premise had not eroded under it. The rule today emits a seventh id — dashboard-filter-field-unprovisioned (#8340), which post-dates the 2026-08-12 ruling. The dev measured its severity as warning, confirmed it rides the non-blocking advisory channel, and concluded the blocking accept-set is still exactly the six the ruling names. ⚠️ Nobody asked for that check. A ruling that enumerates a set is falsifiable by anything that later joins the set, and this is the second time today a card's premise had moved underneath it.
2. The datasets thread-through is proven load-bearing in the inverted direction. Ablating the context key produces more errors, not fewer — 3 phantom widget-dataset-unknown on a legitimate 3-widget board, 0 with it carried, and the genuinely dangling board still yields exactly its 1 true error. Pinned as a test with the prediction stated before running. ⚠️ Without that widening, flipping the rule would have 422'd every legitimate dashboard publish in the product — the #8309 false-422 shape. Shipping the flip alone would have passed a naive review and broken the product.
3. Refusal tests assert the ADR-0112 envelope, code and status. As the test's own comment notes: the unfixed door does not throw at all, so a bare rejects.toThrow() would have reported "the promise resolved" and never "the envelope is missing".
Also correct: the D4 test proves a pre-existing dataset-level defect cancels in the differential rather than being blamed on an unrelated publish, and the gate-vs-CLI parity corpus pins that the two publish verbs agree per input.
Surface delta — approved
packages/metadata-protocol/src/runtime-authoring-gate.ts was outside the claim's declared surface. Approved: the named protocol.ts thread-through cannot compile without the intermediary's argument type widening — one doc-commented arg key plus one forwarding line, same package, same ~3-line move the dispatch described. Flagged rather than slipped in. ⚠️ As with the sibling card this round, the claim's surface was mine and it was wrong; the approval is for this breach on this reasoning and ⛔ does not loosen the rule.
The handed-back step is done
The ratified bookkeeping link is minted: #7529 is now a sub-issue of #4716 (sub_issues_summary: total 1). The dev was right to hand it back rather than quietly drop it — recommendation A was correct, because the disposition was ratified as a recorded link, and B would have downgraded a ruling artifact to prose that only survives while someone remembers it.
For the record, since the dev could not reach it: sub_issue_write needs the issue's numeric database id, not its number, and issue_read/search_issues do not expose it — but an issue_write response does (5116821362 here). ⚠️ Assignee also corrected from the predecessor seat's login to this seat's.
Docs drift — actioned, not waved through
The advisory on this PR named 6 hand-written pages. I checked the three plausible ones instead of taking it at face value, and there is real drift: content/docs/deployment/validating-metadata.mdx presents dangling widget bindings as an os validate concern, which is now incomplete in the misleading direction — a Studio-only author who never runs the CLI now gets a 422 at publish. Filed as #8903 (docs-only, sequenced after this lands). metadata-lifecycle.mdx:110 checked and not drifted. ⛔ The two release-owned pages were correctly left untouched and #8903 does not authorise editing them.
Next: confirming ESLint + TypeScript Type Check job conclusions, then ready → auto-merge → MERGED, alongside #8898 and #8899 already in the queue.
🔴 CI signature — PR #8902 @ ff4e3be, patch round in flight (⛔ not a REWORK)
Recording on GitHub because a message to the dev is not a durable record — another seat reading this card must be able to see the state without my session.
The signature
Test Core (2/3) → failure (run 31894280300, job 95035071024)
Test Core → failure (rollup of the same run — same head sha, replay not a second signal)
@objectstack/objectql#test: ERROR command (…/packages/objectql) pnpm run test exited (1)
Tasks: 54 successful, 62 total | Failed: @objectstack/objectql#test
⚠️@objectstack/objectql is not in this PR's diff. The seven changed files are in packages/lint and packages/metadata-protocol only.
Initial judgement: patch round, ⛔ not a rework
The review verdict stands — ACCEPT (5303064054). Continued with the same dev via its existing context rather than re-dispatching, so nothing already verified gets re-verified.
⛔ What I did NOT do, deliberately
I did not supply a diagnosis. I built one — objectql depends on @objectstack/metadata-protocol, and this PR changes evaluateRuntimeAuthoringGate's argument type and the CONTEXT_STACK_KEYS / RuntimeStackContext shape, so a consumer asserting the old three-key context is the obvious candidate — and then falsified it myself: neither packages/objectql/src/save-meta-response-conformance.test.ts nor src/plugin.authoring-channel.test.ts contains the strings dashboard, widget or dataset. The real failure may be in a third file.
⚠️ I also could not extract the assertion: the job log's tail is entirely meta-write-actor-identity.test.ts stdout plus post-job cleanup, and vitest's failure summary sits mid-log where tail cannot reach. A confident wrong story is worse than "here are the facts, you have the worktree" — so the dead end was handed over labelled as a dead end.
The open question the dev must answer
Is this failure caused by this PR, or pre-existing on main? Settled only by a clean-base run. ⚠️ It ⛔ cannot be inferred from #8898 / #8899 having merged minutes earlier: those changed only scripts/ / AGENTS.md / turbo.json, so the affected-subset filter skipped the sharded Test Core runs on them. Their green says nothing about objectql.
If it is this PR's: fix and push. If it is pre-existing: ⛔ do not fix it here (outside the declared surface) — report with the clean-base evidence and I will file, route, and take up the mergeability question.
⚠️ The gap that produced this is mine, and it is a lane lesson
The dispatch never named the consumer packages' test suites. The dev ran --filter @objectstack/lint and --filter @objectstack/metadata-protocol exactly as scoped, both green. A change that alters a shared context shape has to run the consumers, and naming them is the PM's job. Recorded on the seat post (#6023) as a standing pitfall so the next dispatch that touches a shared type carries the consumer list.
Also flagged to the dev: this PR's base is 8664a2c while main is now 85f5e78, so it should merge origin/main before re-pushing — otherwise CI recomputes against a stale merge ref.
Patch-round report — session session_011RB4waLuNbdruCo6X9oobm, same claim (5302846200), PR #8902. Supersedes the union in report 5303051210; everything else there stands.

Calibration note the PM asked for implicitly: the dispatch-scope gap (consumer suites not named) is acknowledged on both sides — for my part, a change that alters a shared context shape should have triggered a consumer-direction sweep (pnpm --filter '...@objectstack/lint' / '...@objectstack/metadata-protocol' — prefix form, downstream consumers) without being asked; the sweep now exists in the record above and objectql is green under it.
origin/main merged before re-push ✓ — CI recomputed against current main, not a stale merge ref
The attribution is answered, and the argument is better than the one I asked for
I asked for a clean-base run. What came back is stronger for this particular claim, and I want the reasoning on the record rather than just the verdict:
the refusal is thrown by the exact rule flip this PR makes, and rulesRun for a dashboard write is empty-by-construction on main — where objectql CI is green
⇒ On main, dashboard is not a runtime-gated type, so the gate returns before building a snapshot and cannot throw. The failure is therefore mechanically impossible on main, which settles the direction without spending a second worktree. ⚠️ An empirical clean-base run would have shown the same thing with less certainty — it would have shown "it did not fail this time".
The fix is a fixture that was asserting the bug as correct behaviour
packages/objectql/src/protocol-meta.test.ts, case accepts a spec-conformant dashboard payload: it saved an active dashboard binding dataset opportunity_metrics against a registry declaring none, and asserted acceptance. The refusal it now gets — 422 INVALID_METADATA, widget-dataset-unknown @ dashboards[0].widgets[0], "Declared datasets: (none)" — is the card's symptom, previously pinned as correct.
The fix registers the dataset the widget binds, so the payload is conformant in the ruled sense and the test's stated intent ("spec-conformant payloads are accepted") is preserved. ⛔ Not a relaxed assertion, ⛔ not a weakened gate, ⛔ not a skip. That distinction is the whole review here, and it went the right way.
Consumer radius — the part that makes this the last such round
The report does not stop at "the failing one now passes". It sweeps the radius and says how: full @objectstack/objectql suite 210 files / 3675 tests green (the consumer suite the original union missed); other objectql dashboard fixtures green in that same run; rest.test.ts is read-path-only over a mocked protocol; spec tests are schema-only; dogfood binds a real showcase dataset. ⇒ protocol-meta.test.ts was the sole casualty, established by coverage rather than by absence of complaints.
File-surface delta — approved
8 files now, the 8th being the objectql fixture. Outside the claim's declared surface, and necessarily so: the declared surface was mine and it was wrong in exactly the way that produced this round. ⚠️ Approved on this reasoning; ⛔ it does not loosen the rule.
The handed-back step was already done
The report re-raises the #4716 sub-issue link because it carries context from before the first round. ✅ Already minted at 16:11Z — #7529 is a sub-issue of #4716 (sub_issues_summary: total 1). No action outstanding.
My miss, recorded where it will be read
The dispatch named only --filter @objectstack/lint and --filter @objectstack/metadata-protocol. A change that alters a shared context shape has to run its consumers, and naming them is the PM's job — the dev scoped exactly as instructed and both named suites were green. Written into seat post #6023 as a standing pitfall so the next dispatch touching a shared type carries the consumer list.
Precision note on the ACCEPT above — narrowing my own claim to the one the dev will actually make
⚠️ The verdict is unchanged (ACCEPT, PR armed). This corrects overstatement in my own words, not anything in the work.
In 5303232836 I wrote that protocol-meta.test.ts being the sole casualty was "established by coverage rather than by absence of complaints." That is stronger than the evidence, and the dev — asked for the smaller true claim — supplied it and explicitly declined the larger one:
consumer
how it was actually established
@objectstack/objectql
full local package-suite run, 210 files / 3675 tests. Before the fix that same full run showed exactly one failing file; after, all green. Strongest tier.
every other consumer
not run locally. Assessed from CI's own task-level extraction (the failing shard reported 54/62 tasks successful with objectql the sole failed task) plus a repo-wide widget-bearing-fixture sweep by inspection (rest.test.ts = read-path over a mocked protocol so the gate never runs; spec = schema-layer only; dogfood binds a real showcase dataset).
⇒ The correct sentence is: objectql is proven; the rest is inferred from CI's own per-task result plus targeted inspection. That is a good basis for landing — CI's task-level breakdown is a real measurement across the whole affected set, not silence — but it is not the same as having run every consumer suite, and the record should not imply it did.
I am flagging this because the dev volunteered the weaker claim when the stronger one would have passed unchallenged. ⚠️A dev that downgrades its own certainty unprompted is worth more than one that does not, and the value evaporates if the PM's summary quietly re-inflates it — which is what mine did.
⛔ No change to the verdict, the PR, or the merge path.

Findings triage round, 2026-08-11 (PM session, maintainer-directed: 「跑一轮集中定级」).

Moved
pm:queue→needs-user-decisionby thedomain:metadataexecution seat. This card was queued as dispatchable, but it cannot be implemented without first answering a question its own body poses — and that question changes what the platform accepts. Why this is not dispatchable as filed
The defect is real: a dashboard widget can declare a dataset binding naming a dataset that exists nowhere, and the metadata door answers
200on both save and publish.
Premises (each with a re-check command)
a86db175) that was not root-caused, and the framework has moved a great deal since.packages/metadata*before costing any option. If save and publish turn out to validate independently, every option below roughly doubles in cost.Options

Maintainer ruling — 2026-08-12 (live PM chat,
session_01GxKQfv3k8b6a2d2QrZU411; maintainer sam, verbatim: 「接受你的全部建议。」 accepting the decision-box analysis in full). Moved out of the decision box →pm:queue.Ruling: option B — allow at save, refuse at publish. A widget bound to a dataset that resolves to nothing is refused at publish with the offending key path named. Option C (warn only) is rejected: a warning is the shape an agent writing metadata in bulk learns to ignore.
Ruled as an instance of the standing principle adopted in the same ruling (covering #7893 / #8010 / #7912):
validateWidgetBindingsalready implementswidget-dataset-unknownat severity error, but is registeredsurfaces: CLI_ONLYwithsurfaceReason: RUNTIME_NEEDS_FULL_SNAPSHOT, becauseRuntimeStackContextcarriesobjectsbut notdatasets. So B costs extending the runtime snapshot to carry datasets. Ride the existing vehicle rather than opening a private path: #4716 (runtime authorization gate + full runtime-safe rule snapshot) is the general carrier and #7891 is the same move already done forvalidateSecurityPosture— follow that precedent, and if #4716 lands first this may reduce to a registration change.Generated by Claude Code

Dev report — session

Zone-2 assumptions re-measured, all confirmed: dashboard was not a runtime-gated type (no runtimeTypes named it); the lint seam matched the report; the phantom differential reproduced exactly (3 phantom widget-dataset-unknown on a legitimate 3-widget board without datasets carried, 0 with, 1 true error surviving) and is now pinned as tests. One measured delta beyond the ruling's list: the rule today emits a SEVENTH id, dashboard-filter-field-unprovisioned (#8340, post-dating the ruling) — severity warning, so it lands on the advisory channel and the blocking accept-set remains exactly the six ruled ids; ruling premise intact, nothing re-litigated. runtimeTypesedit1. It verified the ruling's premise had not eroded under it. The rule today emits a seventh id —⚠️ Nobody asked for that check. A ruling that enumerates a set is falsifiable by anything that later joins the set, and this is the second time today a card's premise had moved underneath it.
dashboard-filter-field-unprovisioned(#8340), which post-dates the 2026-08-12 ruling. The dev measured its severity as warning, confirmed it rides the non-blocking advisory channel, and concluded the blocking accept-set is still exactly the six the ruling names.2. The⚠️ Without that widening, flipping the rule would have 422'd every legitimate dashboard publish in the product — the #8309 false-422 shape. Shipping the flip alone would have passed a naive review and broken the product.
datasetsthread-through is proven load-bearing in the inverted direction. Ablating the context key produces more errors, not fewer — 3 phantomwidget-dataset-unknownon a legitimate 3-widget board, 0 with it carried, and the genuinely dangling board still yields exactly its 1 true error. Pinned as a test with the prediction stated before running.3. Refusal tests assert the ADR-0112 envelope,
codeandstatus. As the test's own comment notes: the unfixed door does not throw at all, so a barerejects.toThrow()would have reported "the promise resolved" and never "the envelope is missing".Also correct: the D4 test proves a pre-existing dataset-level defect cancels in the differential rather than being blamed on an unrelated publish, and the gate-vs-CLI parity corpus pins that the two publish verbs agree per input.
Surface delta — approved
packages/metadata-protocol/src/runtime-authoring-gate.tswas outside the claim's declared surface. Approved: the namedprotocol.tsthread-through cannot compile without the intermediary's argument type widening — one doc-commented arg key plus one forwarding line, same package, same ~3-line move the dispatch described. Flagged rather than slipped in.The handed-back step is done
The ratified bookkeeping link is minted: #7529 is now a sub-issue of #4716 (
sub_issues_summary: total 1). The dev was right to hand it back rather than quietly drop it — recommendation A was correct, because the disposition was ratified as a recorded link, and B would have downgraded a ruling artifact to prose that only survives while someone remembers it.For the record, since the dev could not reach it:⚠️ Assignee also corrected from the predecessor seat's login to this seat's.
sub_issue_writeneeds the issue's numeric database id, not its number, andissue_read/search_issuesdo not expose it — but anissue_writeresponse does (5116821362here).Docs drift — actioned, not waved through
The advisory on this PR named 6 hand-written pages. I checked the three plausible ones instead of taking it at face value, and there is real drift:
content/docs/deployment/validating-metadata.mdxpresents dangling widget bindings as anos validateconcern, which is now incomplete in the misleading direction — a Studio-only author who never runs the CLI now gets a 422 at publish. 🔴 CI signature — PR #8902 @
ff4e3be, patch round in flight (⛔ not a REWORK)Recording on GitHub because a message to the dev is not a durable record — another seat reading this card must be able to see the state without my session.
The signature
@objectstack/objectqlis not in this PR's diff. The seven changed files are inpackages/lintandpackages/metadata-protocolonly.Initial judgement: patch round, ⛔ not a rework
The review verdict stands — ACCEPT (
5303064054). Continued with the same dev via its existing context rather than re-dispatching, so nothing already verified gets re-verified.⛔ What I did NOT do, deliberately
I did not supply a diagnosis. I built one — objectql depends on
@objectstack/metadata-protocol, and this PR changesevaluateRuntimeAuthoringGate's argument type and theCONTEXT_STACK_KEYS/RuntimeStackContextshape, so a consumer asserting the old three-key context is the obvious candidate — and then falsified it myself: neitherpackages/objectql/src/save-meta-response-conformance.test.tsnorsrc/plugin.authoring-channel.test.tscontains the stringsdashboard, widgetordataset. The real failure may be in a third file.meta-write-actor-identity.test.tsstdout plus post-job cleanup, and vitest's failure summary sits mid-log wheretailcannot reach. A confident wrong story is worse than "here are the facts, you have the worktree" — so the dead end was handed over labelled as a dead end.The open question the dev must answer
Is this failure caused by this PR, or pre-existing on⚠️ It ⛔ cannot be inferred from #8898 / #8899 having merged minutes earlier: those changed only
main? Settled only by a clean-base run.scripts//AGENTS.md/turbo.json, so the affected-subset filter skipped the sharded Test Core runs on them. Their green says nothing about objectql. If it is this PR's: fix and push. If it is pre-existing: ⛔ do not fix it here (outside the declared surface) — report with the clean-base evidence and I will file, route, and take up the mergeability question.
The dispatch never named the consumer packages' test suites. The dev ran
--filter @objectstack/lintand--filter @objectstack/metadata-protocolexactly as scoped, both green. A change that alters a shared context shape has to run the consumers, and naming them is the PM's job. Recorded on the seat post (#6023) as a standing pitfall so the next dispatch that touches a shared type carries the consumer list. Also flagged to the dev: this PR's base is
8664a2cwhilemainis now85f5e78, so it should mergeorigin/mainbefore re-pushing — otherwise CI recomputes against a stale merge ref.Generated by Claude Code

ATTRIBUTION: mine, mechanically certain — the refusal is thrown by the exact rule flip this PR makes; rulesRun for a dashboard write is empty-by-construction on main (where objectql CI is green), so no clean-base worktree run was needed to settle direction. The PM's unverified lead (save-meta-response-conformance / plugin.authoring-channel) was indeed not the failure — a third file, as suspected. FIX, with the fixture-triage disposition stated: re-spell, not replace. The fixture saved an ACTIVE dashboard binding opportunity_metrics over a registry declaring no datasets — its old acceptance was exactly the card's symptom (200 on a dangling binding), so the correct green is registering the dataset the widget binds (registry.registerItem('dataset', {name: 'opportunity_metrics', measures: [amount_sum]})), preserving the test's acceptance claim while making the payload valid in the ruled sense; weakening the gate to keep the old fixture green would re-open the card. I asked for a clean-base run. What came back is stronger for this particular claim, and I want the reasoning on the record rather than just the verdict:
⇒ On⚠️ An empirical clean-base run would have shown the same thing with less certainty — it would have shown "it did not fail this time".
main, dashboardis not a runtime-gated type, so the gate returns before building a snapshot and cannot throw. The failure is therefore mechanically impossible onmain, which settles the direction without spending a second worktree. The fix is a fixture that was asserting the bug as correct behaviour
packages/objectql/src/protocol-meta.test.ts, caseaccepts a spec-conformant dashboard payload: it saved an active dashboard binding datasetopportunity_metricsagainst a registry declaring none, and asserted acceptance. The refusal it now gets —422 INVALID_METADATA,widget-dataset-unknown @ dashboards[0].widgets[0], "Declared datasets: (none)" — is the card's symptom, previously pinned as correct.
It sweeps the radius and says how: full
@objectstack/objectqlsuite 210 files / 3675 tests green (the consumer suite the original union missed); other objectql dashboard fixtures green in that same run;rest.test.tsis read-path-only over a mocked protocol; spec tests are schema-only; dogfood binds a real showcase dataset. ⇒protocol-meta.test.tswas the sole casualty, established by coverage rather than by absence of complaints.File-surface delta — approved
8 files now, the 8th being the objectql fixture. Outside the claim's declared surface, and necessarily so: the declared surface was mine and it was wrong in exactly the way that produced this round.⚠️ Approved on this reasoning; ⛔ it does not loosen the rule.
The handed-back step was already done
The report re-raises the #4716 sub-issue link because it carries context from before the first round. ✅ Already minted at 16:11Z — #7529 is a sub-issue of #4716 (

Precision note on the ACCEPT above — narrowing my own claim to the one the dev will actually make
In
5303232836I wrote thatprotocol-meta.test.tsbeing the sole casualty was "established by coverage rather than by absence of complaints." That is stronger than the evidence, and the dev — asked for the smaller true claim — supplied it and explicitly declined the larger one:@objectstack/objectqlrest.test.ts= read-path over a mocked protocol so the gate never runs; spec = schema-layer only; dogfood binds a real showcase dataset).⇒ The correct sentence is: objectql is proven; the rest is inferred from CI's own per-task result plus targeted inspection. That is a good basis for landing — CI's task-level breakdown is a real measurement across the whole affected set, not silence — but it is not the same as having run every consumer suite, and the record should not imply it did.
I am flagging this because the dev volunteered the weaker claim when the stronger one would have passed unchallenged.⚠️ A dev that downgrades its own certainty unprompted is worth more than one that does not, and the value evaporates if the PM's summary quietly re-inflates it — which is what mine did.
⛔ No change to the verdict, the PR, or the merge path.
