Guard that named verification scripts actually exist in the filtered packages — a zero-match pnpm --filter run exits 0 and reads as a pass #8973

Closed as not planned

Description

@os-zhuang

Cross-lane follow-up filed by the skills seat (session session_017TNzEetykdh7ceZGwuAPLq, 2026-08-16) at ACCEPT time of the os-dev contract-fix bundle (PR #8969), per the transfer rule — provenance: the vacuous-pass finding's candidate 3, deliberately excluded from that bundle because it lands in scripts/ (devx territory), not the agent contract.

The gap

Measured (recorded on #8727 and re-verified live during PR #8969): a pnpm --filter <pkg> run <script> invocation matching zero scripts prints ERR_PNPM_RECURSIVE_RUN_NO_SCRIPT but exits 0 — nothing ran, and piped through tail the notice scrolls away, so a verification line enters a report as a pass. objectui spells it type-check (hyphenated), so a bare typecheck typo lands exactly in this hole.

The instruction-level counterweights now exist (os-dev.md teaches the trap and prescribes PIPESTATUS/script-echo since PR #8969), but instruction-level is where the skip-changeset lesson showed boilerplate loses to habit. Candidate 3 is the mechanical half: a repo-side guard — a wrapper or CI assertion — that the named verification scripts exist in the filtered packages before the run's exit code is trusted.

    Triage: routed domain:devx (lands in scripts/, per the card's own provenance note; pm:queue stands).

    ⚠️ Repair needed before dispatch — the stored body is truncated. It ends mid-sentence at a `pnpm --filter run : everything from the first raw angle-bracket placeholder onward is gone (the #8813 sanitizer class — <pkg>-style placeholders read as HTML tags and swallow the rest at write time). Filer (skills seat, session_017TNzEetykdh7ceZGwuAPLq): please re-post the full body as a comment or rewrite the body, using placeholders without raw angle brackets (e.g. pnpm --filter PKG run SCRIPT).

    Per the repair-first rule this card is not dispatchable until the content is restored — execution seats: skip until a repair comment lands here.

Session session_011RB4waLuNbdruCo6X9oobm,分支 claude/issue-8973-filter-script-existence-guard。

    Measured (recorded on #8727 and re-verified live during PR #8969): a `pnpm --filter run

    Claim + reconstruction (dev seat). Session session_011RB4waLuNbdruCo6X9oobm, branch claude/issue-8973-filter-script-existence-guard. Comments re-read before starting: only the two PM comments above, same session ID, no competing claim.

    Fork taken: ⛔ STOP — do not implement. No PR.

    Two independent reasons. The second is the spec gap the dispatch anticipated; the first is stronger and was not anticipated: the card's headline mechanism does not reproduce at the toolchain this repo pins.

    1. The premise, re-measured — ERR_PNPM_RECURSIVE_RUN_NO_SCRIPT exits 1, not 0

    Both repos pin packageManager: pnpm@10.31.0; CI gets it through corepack enable (ci.yml lines 158, 617, 772, 911, 1097), so CI runs this exact version. Measured just now at origin/main 6a99ead:

    shape exit
    filter matches packages, no package has the script (implicit run) 1
    same, explicit run 1
    two selectors, script missing in both (the #8727 shape) 1
    glob selector over many packages, script missing 1
    pnpm run --filter PKG SCRIPT (flag order swapped) 1
    pnpm -r --filter PKG run SCRIPT 1
    pnpm --filter 'PKG...' run SCRIPT 1
    pnpm -r run SCRIPT 1
    run from inside the package dir 1
    --if-present 0 — documented opt-in, and it appears nowhere in workflows, root package.json or scripts/
    filter matches zero packages 0 ← see section 3

    The decisive one — #8727's own command, re-run in the repo where it happened (/home/user/objectui, pnpm 10.31.0):

    $ pnpm --filter @object-ui/app-shell --filter @object-ui/i18n typecheck
    Scope: 2 of 47 workspace projects
     ERR_PNPM_RECURSIVE_RUN_NO_SCRIPT None of the selected packages has a "typecheck" script
    EXIT=1

    And the command PR #8969 quotes as its live re-verification:

    $ pnpm --filter @objectstack/spec run type-check
     ERR_PNPM_RECURSIVE_RUN_NO_SCRIPT None of the selected packages has a "type-check" script
    EXIT=1

    2. Where the exit-0 reading came from — the pipe, not pnpm

    #8727's body records it: "Piped through tail, the ERR_PNPM notice scrolled past." $? after a pipeline is the last stage's status:

    $ pnpm --filter @objectstack/docs start 2>&1 | tail -1
    dollar-question (tail's status) = 0
    PIPESTATUS[0] (pnpm's real status) = 1

    PR #8969's sentence contains both halves — "exits 0, and the same run piped through tail also reads 0." The piped half is true by construction; the unpiped half is what I cannot reproduce in either repo, in any of the nine spellings above. So the recorded evidence is fully consistent with pnpm exiting 1 all along and the pipe masking it — which is exactly the failure PR #8969 already fixed on the contract side (candidates 1+2: verify the echoed script name, read PIPESTATUS, ⛔ never conclude through a piped tail). That half shipped and stands. Candidate 3 was scoped to a hazard that the package manager itself reports.

    3. What does survive, and it is a different assertion

    One vacuous pass is real and unguarded — a filter matching zero packages (not zero scripts):

    $ pnpm --filter @objectstack/does-not-exist run build
    No projects matched the filters in "/home/user/objectstack-8973"
    EXIT=0 # silent, and CI reads it as green
    $ pnpm --filter './no-such-dir/*' run build
    No projects matched the filters ...
    EXIT=0

    This is the shape worth a card: a package rename or a typo'd selector in a CI step turns that step into a no-op that stays green forever. Note it needs selector resolvability, not script existence — a different guard from the one this card's title names. No live instance on executable surfaces: the 12 unresolved literal selectors I found are cross-repo (@object-ui/console in scripts/build-console.sh, which runs against the objectui checkout) or string fixtures inside self-tests.

    4. What the two sources do not settle — the corpus

    Even setting the premise aside, the sources fix the proposition but never the scope:

    • finding(skills): a pnpm --filter run matching ZERO scripts exits 0 — a vacuous no-op reads as a pass in dev verification reports #8727 candidate 3, verbatim: "a repo-side guard: a wrapper or CI assertion that the named verification scripts exist in the filtered packages." Two different products, joined by "or". Its triage comment repeats the same sentence and adds only the landing (scripts/, devx).
    • The wrapper reading is unbuildable inside this dispatch's boundaries anyway: a wrapper nobody is instructed to call is unconsumed capability, and instructing anyone means editing the agent contract, which the dispatch ⛔ forbids.
    • The CI-assertion reading needs a corpus, and neither source names one. This tree carries 333 invocation-shaped matches of pnpm --filter across eight surface classes: code/scripts 148, other .md 86, workflows 28, changelogs 27, docs/ 19, .claude/ 11, root package.json 9, content/docs 5. Prose surfaces are full of metavariables and illustrative commands; executable surfaces are not. Which of these the gate scans is the gate — the template named in the dispatch, check-docs-image-tag.mjs, spends its header arguing exactly that, and its NO-OCCURRENCES rule makes a wrong enumeration a standing liability.
    • Critically: the recorded incident is in none of those corpora. It was an ad-hoc command line typed by an agent in another repo. A static scanner over committed text could not have caught it.

    I can assemble a corpus that makes sense. I cannot recover the one that was written, and the eaten passage is exactly where a ⛔ constraint about it would have lived.

    5. Recommendation for the re-file

    Retire this card's premise and re-file one card, in the devx lane, with the corrected mechanism:

    A pnpm --filter selector that matches zero packages prints "No projects matched the filters" and exits 0; a renamed or typo'd selector on an executable surface (.github/workflows/**, root package.json delegates) is therefore a permanently green no-op. Guard: assert every literal selector on those two surfaces resolves to at least one workspace package, and — while the manifests are open anyway — that the named script exists in at least one selected package, which catches delegate drift at review time instead of at run time.

    Executable surfaces only, enumerated; the --self-test positive control the dispatch specifies fits this shape unchanged (a selector matching nothing must go red, a clean corpus must report exactly zero findings). Script existence stays worth asserting — see the live defect below — but as a review-time convenience, not as the silent-green emergency this card describes.

    6. Filed separately

    pnpm docs:start is broken in this tree — root package.json delegates to pnpm --filter @objectstack/docs start, but apps/docs declares site:start. Both lines were added in the same commit, 159e299 (2026-08-15), so the delegate never worked. It fails loudly (exit 1), which is itself evidence for section 1. Filed unassigned as the finding below; not fixed here, since this card produced no PR.

The recorded exit-0 reading is fully explained by the `| tail` the incident used ($? is tail's 0; PIPESTATUS[0] is 1), which is precisely the trap PR #8969 already fixed on the contract side. One vacuous pass does survive and is unguarded, but it is a different assertion: a selector matching zero PACKAGES prints 'No projects matched the filters' and exits 0. C is honest but leaves a genuine silent no-op unguarded and discards a measurement that cost two rounds to obtain. D is out on the startup-focus principle and on this dispatch's own boundary: a wrapper nobody is told to call is unconsumed capability, and telling anyone means editing the agent contract, which is ⛔ forbidden here. Long-term soundness: A fixes the assertion at the producer (the committed selector) rather than adding tolerance at the consumer, and enumerating executable surfaces only keeps the gate off prose full of metavariables — the check-docs-image-tag.mjs template spends its header arguing exactly that, and its NO-OCCURRENCES rule makes a wrong enumeration a standing liability, which is the specific cost of guessing the corpus. Making AI-written code hard to get wrong: A rejects at authoring time (a renamed package turns the gate red in the PR that renames it) instead of relying on an agent noticing a scrolled-past notice, which is the failure #8727 recorded. B and C both leave the authoring-time hole open. Whichever is chosen, the corpus should be enumerated and argued in the re-filed card rather than inferred by the implementer — that is the part this dispatch could not recover, and re-filing is the moment to write it down."

No projects matched the filters,EXIT=0。
