Adds a new example, 3D GTA with a map (examples/3d-gta-with-a-map): the 3D Grand Theft Auto starter on a map made with the 3D terrain extension (the same as in the 3D island example, #1080).

The starter itself is unchanged. It is only renamed Minimalist 3D GTA in its README.

The map

  • A town on flat ground: a grid of asphalt streets with dashed lane markings, concrete sidewalks, offices and skyscrapers, a park with trees, a construction site with cones, barriers and crates to smash, and street lights.
  • A country road leaving the town, going through farms, and climbing a hill in a spiral to a lookout at the top. The road is carved in the terrain (at most a 14% grade), so cars can drive up to the top.
  • A loop road back to the town through the countryside, so there's a circuit to drive.
  • Mountains around the map, plus invisible walls at its limits.
  • Grass blades only where they're seen up close (the fields along the loop road, the bottom of the hill and the park), to keep it light on mobile devices.
  • Height blending (0.8) and texture variation (0.5) of the terrain, new in the extension: roads have crisp borders with the ground around them.

The terrain is 8192 x 8192 pixels at a 256 x 256 resolution. Its shape is in its Edits property: raise, flatten, smooth and paint strokes. It can be sculpted and painted with the tools of the scene editor. The terrain has the 3D physics behavior, so the cars and the player drive and walk on it. The events are the ones of the starter.

Assets (all CC0)

  • Kenney's City Kits (Commercial, Suburban, Roads): buildings, houses, street lights, cones, barriers and trees. Their texture is embedded in each .glb, so that each is a single resource.
  • Quaternius' "Ultimate Nature" pack: pine trees and bushes (the same files as the island example).
  • ambientCG textures and normal maps: Grass004, Asphalt025C, Rock058 and Concrete034, at 512 x 512.

Gameplay tests

  • The two tests of the starter, plus two new tests:
    • The player and the cars start on the ground of the town: all five cars and the player rest on the terrain.
    • A car climbs the road of the hill: the car drives 327 px up a 13% slope, climbing 43 px, and stays on its wheels.
  • The tests hide the grass, render at 160 x 90 and turn off shadows, like the island example's tests: they run in a software renderer.
  • Locally (Electron with SwiftShader), "Player enters a car and drives it forward" and both new tests pass, in 6 to 22 s.
  • "Player walks and jumps", the first test of the run, times out locally on its first frames, which compile every shader. The starter on main does the same on this machine (40.9 s for 30 s), so it isn't caused by this change. On CI, a run whose only failures are timeouts is retried once.

Not checked

  • I couldn't run the full database build: it copies every example and there wasn't enough disk space. The resources, theme slots (the starter's are unchanged) and the scripts' Jest tests were checked.
  • I haven't played it in the editor or on a phone. I looked at it through screenshots taken by gameplay tests (preview.png is one of them).

- A town with streets, lane markings, sidewalks, buildings, a park and a
construction site, a country road going through farms and climbing a
hill, and mountains around the map. The terrain is described by its
Edits (raise, flatten, smooth and paint strokes) and uses the 3D physics
behavior, so cars and the player drive and walk on it.
- CC0 assets: Kenney's City Kits (buildings, houses, street lights, cones,
barriers, trees), Quaternius' pine trees and bushes, and ambientCG's
textures for grass, asphalt, rock and concrete.
- Gameplay tests check that the player and the cars rest on the terrain
and that a car climbs the road of the hill. Tests hide the grass and
render small and without shadows, as they run in a software renderer.
- The new objects are mapped to theme slots.
